Circle of Intersection of a Sphere and a Plane

If a plane cuts a sphere of radius $$r$$ at perpendicular distance $$d$$ from its centre, the radius $$r$$ of the circle of intersection is:

$$r=\sqrt{R^2-d^2}$$

Usage

- Used to find the radius of the circular cross-section formed by a plane cutting a sphere.
