Logarithmic Differentiation
If:
$$y=f(x)$$
and taking logarithm simplifies the expression, then:
$$\ln y=\ln f(x)$$
Differentiating:
$$\frac{y'}{y}=\frac{d}{dx}[\ln f(x)]$$
Usage
- Useful for products, quotients, powers and variable exponents that are difficult to differentiate directly.
