Important Equivalent Infinitesimals

As $$x\to0$$:

$$\sin x\sim x$$

$$\tan x\sim x$$

$$\ln(1+x)\sim x$$

$$e^x-1\sim x$$

$$1-\cos x\sim\frac{x^2}{2}$$

Terminology

- $$f(x)\sim g(x)$$ → $$\lim_{x\to0}\frac{f(x)}{g(x)}=1$$.

Usage

- Used to replace complicated expressions by equivalent simpler expressions while evaluating limits.

Question 1

If $$\lim_{x\to0}\frac{\sqrt{1+\sin x}-\sqrt{1-\sin x}-x}{x^3}=\lambda,$$ then the value of $$48\lambda$$ is:

Question 2

Evaluate the following limit:

$$\lim_{x \to 0} \frac{\cos(x) \cdot e^{x^2/2} - \sqrt{1 - x^4}}{\ln(1 + x^2) - \sin^2(x)}$$

Question 3

The value of the limit $$\lim_{x \to 0} \frac{6[\cos(\sin(3x)) - \cos(3x)]}{x^4}$$ is equal to:
