Clear Your Basics First
JEE essentially tests the conceptual understanding of each chapter. The candidate must focus on getting his fundamentals right. He should also work on his problem-solving approach and learn to apply standard techniques such as free body diagrams in Mechanics, Kirchhoff's laws in Electrodynamics, and ray diagrams in Optics.
Maintain a Formula Book
You must have a separate book for formulae and all the key results that you encounter across your preparation. Formulas from Kinematics, Electrostatics, Thermodynamics, Optics, and Modern Physics are very important and should be revised regularly throughout your entire preparation.
Practice is the Key
You must solve as many questions as you can. Solve all the questions from JEE Previous Papers where you will get a clear understanding of the type of questions that are being asked in the exam across years. This will also help you identify high-weightage topics and improve your speed and accuracy under exam conditions.
The topic clusters of Mechanics and Electrodynamics are the two dominant sections in JEE Mains Physics and together account for 16–17 out of 25 questions every year. Mechanics includes Kinematics, Laws of Motion, Work-Energy & Power, Rotational Motion, Gravitation, and Fluid Mechanics. Electrodynamics covers Electrostatics, Current Electricity, EMF & Circuit Analysis, Magnetic Effects of Current, Electromagnetic Induction, and Alternating Currents. Optics & Modern Physics — combining Ray Optics, Wave Optics, Dual Nature of Matter, Atomic Structure, Nuclear Physics, and Semiconductors — is the third-largest cluster. The Physics cutoff for JEE Advanced changes every year depending on the difficulty level of the paper and overall student performance. Generally, candidates need to score around 5% to 10% marks in Physics individually to qualify for the rank list.
Candidates preparing through self-study should first build strong conceptual clarity using NCERT books and standard reference books. Regular problem-solving, revision of formulas, practising numerical questions, and attempting mock tests are essential for scoring well in JEE Physics.
To improve your JEE Physics score, focus on understanding concepts deeply instead of memorising formulas. Solve previous year papers, practise numerical problems daily, analyse mistakes from mock tests, and strengthen weak chapters regularly.
