Clear Your Basics First
JEE essentially tests the conceptual understanding of each chapter. The candidate must focus on getting his fundamentals right before attempting advanced-level questions. He should also improve his calculation speed and master the standard tricks and techniques, especially in Calculus (integration substitutions), Algebra (factorisation), and Coordinate Geometry (parametric forms), as these directly save time in the 3-hour exam.
Maintain a Formula Book
You must maintain a separate book for formulae and key results that you encounter across your preparation. Important formulas from Sequences & Series, Trigonometric Identities, Integration, Coordinate Geometry conics, and Vectors must be revised regularly. These are critical because JEE Maths is heavily formula-dependent, and instant recall under exam pressure determines how quickly you can set up and solve a problem.
Practice is the Key
You must solve as many questions as you can. Solve all the questions from JEE Previous Papers where you will get a clear understanding of the type of questions being asked in the exam across years. Topic-wise practice helps identify weak areas early, while full-length JEE Mock Tests build the exam stamina and time management skills needed to attempt 25 Maths questions in 60 minutes.
The topic clusters of Calculus, Algebra, and Coordinate Geometry are consistent across all years and sessions of JEE Mains. Calculus is the single largest contributor every year, with questions from Definite Integration, Applications of Derivatives, Limits, Continuity & Differentiability, Indefinite Integration, and Differential Equations. Algebra contributes heavily through Sequences & Series, Complex Numbers, Matrices & Determinants, Permutations & Combinations, and Probability. Coordinate Geometry questions come from Circles, Parabola, Ellipse, Hyperbola, and Straight Lines. Note: JEE Mains Mathematics has 25 questions per paper (20 MCQs + 5 numerical value type). The figures above are averages across all sessions conducted in each year. The Maths cutoff for JEE Advanced changes every year depending on the paper difficulty and overall student performance. Generally, candidates need to score around 5% to 10% marks in Maths individually to qualify for rank lists.
Candidates preparing through self-study should first complete NCERT concepts and then move to standard JEE books and previous year questions. Maintaining consistency, solving mock tests regularly, and revising formulas daily are key to scoring well.
To improve your JEE Maths score, focus on strengthening weak chapters, practising timed quizzes, analysing mistakes from mock tests, and revising formulas regularly. Speed and accuracy improve only with continuous practice.
