IIM Indore Previous CAT Papers Analysis (2013, 2014 & 2020)

IIM Indore Previous CAT Papers Analysis

IIM Indore has conducted CAT three times — 2013, 2014, and 2020 — and each edition brought major structural changes, from combined sections to a three-slot format, the CAT Exam has come a long way. Analyzing these papers reveals Indore's tendency to innovate rather than repeat, making them valuable for understanding CAT's evolving pattern, difficulty trends, and what CAT 2026 might bring.

IIM Indore CAT 2013 Paper Analysis

CAT 2013 was the fifth year of the computer-based test and is remembered as one of the toughest editions of the modern CAT. It was considered the toughest of the computer-based CATs at that point, with correctly answering around 16 questions in each section resulting in a 99.89 percentile.

Exam Pattern

CAT 2013 had 60 questions and a duration of 140 minutes, with the test split into two sections rather than three. The paper had only two sections until 2014 — QA was combined with DI in one section, and LR was combined with VARC in the other.

Difficulty

QA + DI

At least 3-4 very easy questions appeared in each slot's Quant portion, while DI covered standard percentage increase/decrease and growth-rate questions

Moderate to difficult overall

VA + LR

RC passages were long and dense with tricky questions, though easy-to-eliminate options helped strong readers; LR had 3 sets of 3 questions each, largely from Arrangements and Logical Puzzles

Moderate

Since CAT ran across multiple days and time slots that year, difficulty was normalized across sessions rather than varying sharply slot to slot — the real differentiator was section-level toughness, not which slot a student got. CAT 2013 rewarded raw accuracy over volume with only 60 questions and a combined-section format, a slip in QA-DI or VA-LR had an outsized impact on the percentile, unlike later years where three separate sections gave more room to recover.

IIM Indore CAT 2014 Paper Analysis

CAT 2014 marked a structural jump: the number of questions increased from 60 to 100 and duration extended from 140 to 170 minutes, while retaining the two-section format from 2013.

Exam Pattern

CAT 2014 fixed the number of questions in LR (16) and DI (16) across each slot, with DI positioned at questions 85-100 and LR at questions 35-50. The QADI section had 34 QA questions plus 16 DI questions in 4 sets of 4, while the VALR section had 18 Verbal Ability/Usage questions and 16 questions each from LR and RC (4 sets of 4).

Sections and Slot-wise Difficulty Analysis & Topic Weightage

Section

Slot 1 (Morning)

Topic Weightage

QA (within QADI)

Difficulty level was low; questions tested grasp of fundamentals

Number System, Algebra, Geometry, and Modern Math

DI (within QADI)

Not overly difficult, without convoluted calculations; no Data Sufficiency questions

Growth/comparison-based sets

VA (within VALR)

Low difficulty; RCs were manageable with at most one tough passage out of four

Balanced mix across Verbal Ability areas

LR (within VALR)

Sets of 4 questions each; only 2 sets doable, rest best left alone

Puzzles and arrangement-style sets

QA and VA were very easy, while LR and DI were difficult enough that many students struggled, making Verbal Logic and RC the real scoring saviors that year. Because the pattern was largely fixed across both slots, difficulty stayed consistent rather than shifting significantly slot to slot, this was the last CAT edition combining sections this way before VARC became independent in 2015.

IIM Indore CAT 2020 Paper Analysis

CAT 2020 was conducted during the pandemic and introduced the biggest format shake-up in years. The total question count dropped from 100 to 76, and the exam moved to three separate slots for the first time due to COVID-19 precautions.

Exam Pattern

CAT 2020 reduced duration to 2 hours from 3 hours in 2019, with a fixed sectional time limit of 40 minutes per section. The three sections, VARC, DILR, and QA had 26, 24, and 26 questions respectively. Slots ran as Morning (8:30-10:30 AM), Afternoon (12:30-2:30 PM), and Evening (4:30-6:30 PM).

IIM Indore Previous CAT Papers Analysis: Conclusion

CAT evolved from a punishing, accuracy-only two-section test in 2013-14 to a time-boxed, three-section, multi-slot format by 2020 — shifting the core challenge from "can you solve it" to "can you solve it fast enough, in whichever slot you're assigned." Since IIM Indore has changed something structural in every year it has conducted CAT (2013, 2014, 2020), there's a reasonable chance of at least one tweak in 2026 — possibly in question count, sectional timing, or DILR set composition — even though current reporting says no major changes are expected. Aspirants should prepare for the standard 3-section, 68-question, 120-minute format, but stay flexible for a late-stage surprise, since that has effectively been Indore's track record every time it has held the reins.
