The actual competition can be understood from the 2026–28 admission cycle. More than 1.84 lakh candidates expressed interest in MBA-SM, 2,995 candidates met the initial CAT eligibility criteria and 1,900 candidates were eventually shortlisted for WAT-PI.

IIM Lucknow MBA-SM Curriculum and Learning Experience
The MBA-SM curriculum combines conventional management subjects with specialised sustainability courses from the first year itself. Students study areas such as managerial economics, accounting, finance, operations, marketing and strategy alongside systems thinking, sustainability measurement, environmental law and sustainable management.
The second year becomes more specialised, with subjects such as climate change and externalities trading, lifecycle management, social entrepreneurship, stakeholder management, ESG and EHS risk management, sustainable supply chain management and sustainable/impact investment.
Area | Key Courses |
Management | Managerial Economics, Accounting, Finance |
Marketing | Consumer Behavior, Sustainable Marketing |
Operations | Operations Management, Sustainable Supply Chain |
Strategy | Strategic Management |
Sustainability | Principles of Sustainable Management |
ESG | ESG and EHS Risk Management |
Climate | Climate Change and Externalities Trading |

Analytics | Quantitative Analysis, Research Methods |
One of the biggest differentiators is the nine-month integrated industry project. Students work on live projects while continuing their coursework, with project areas including renewable energy, smart cities, resource optimisation, green marketing and CSR portfolio management.
The programme also includes an international immersion component, giving students exposure to sustainability practices and institutions in international markets. IIM Lucknow describes this as an important part of the programme's global learning experience.
The learning methodology includes case discussions, seminars, role plays, management games, team assignments, presentations and industry interactions. This makes the programme more practical than a purely classroom-based sustainability course.
IIM Lucknow MBA vs MBA-SM: Which One Should You Choose?
The biggest difference between the two programmes is career breadth versus specialisation. IIM Lucknow's regular MBA is designed to develop managers across functions and industries, while MBA-SM adds a specialised focus on sustainability, ESG, climate, social impact and responsible business.
Factor | IIM Lucknow MBA | IIM Lucknow MBA-SM |
Programme Focus | General Management | Sustainable Management |
Work Experience Requirement | No 24-month requirement | Minimum 24 months |
Career Scope | Very Broad | Sustainability + General Management |
CAT | Required | Required |
Consulting | Excellent | Strong, especially ESG |
Finance | Excellent | Sustainability/Impact Finance |
ESG | Available | Major Focus |
Product/ Technology | Strong | Selective opportunities |
Public Policy | Available | Stronger relevance |
Sustainability | General exposure | Core specialisation |
Batch Size | Much Larger | Small, around 40–50 |
Choose the Flagship PGP/ MBA if you want maximum flexibility across consulting, finance, marketing, product management, technology, operations, strategy and general management.
Choose MBA-SM if you already have meaningful work experience and want to build a career specifically around ESG, sustainability, climate, responsible business, social impact, sustainable finance or sustainability consulting.
The 24-month work-experience requirement is an important distinction. MBA-SM is not intended as a conventional “fresh graduate” MBA route; IIM Lucknow explicitly makes the 24-month professional-experience requirement part of the 2026–28 eligibility criteria.
IIM Lucknow MBA Sustainability Management: Conclusion
IIM Lucknow MBA Sustainability Management offers an interesting combination of core MBA education and specialised learning in ESG, climate, sustainable finance, responsible business and social impact. Its small batch, industry-integrated project, international exposure and sustainability-focused curriculum make it particularly relevant for experienced professionals who already have a clearer idea of the sectors they want to enter.
MBA-SM should, however, be evaluated as a specialised career choice rather than simply an alternative route into IIM Lucknow. Candidates should compare its fees, placements, 24-month work-experience requirement and career opportunities with the regular MBA before applying. For professionals committed to building careers around sustainability and ESG, IIM Lucknow MBA Sustainability Management can offer a distinctive combination of management education and sector-focused expertise.
