IIM Bangalore Selection Criteria 2027 CAT Cutoff & Weightage

IIM Bangalore Selection Criteria 2027

IIM Bangalore's two-year Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) leads to an MBA degree and follows a multi-stage admission process. For the 2027-29 batch, candidates are evaluated through CAT, academic performance, work experience/professional qualifications, gender diversity, WAT and Personal Interview.

The biggest takeaway is that CAT alone does not determine admission. IIM Bangalore first prepares a shortlist using CAT, then creates a pre-PI score, conducts WAT and PI, and finally makes offers using the post-PI composite score.

How Does IIM Bangalore Select Candidates for MBA?

IIM Bangalore's selection process is divided into two major stages. Stage I uses CAT and profile components to create the first shortlist and calculate a pre-PI score. Stage II consists of the Written Ability Test and Personal Interview, after which the final composite score determines admission.

Candidates must also submit two online reference letters, preferably from an employer or academic referee. IIMB specifically states that the application cannot be completed until the reference section is submitted.

IIM Bangalore CAT Cutoff for Shortlisting

In the 2027–29 admission procedure document, IIM Bangalore has specified minimum CAT percentile requirements for the first shortlist. The General-category requirement is 85 overall, with minimum sectional percentiles of 80 in VARC and 75 each in DILR and QA.

However, these are minimum shortlist cutoffs for the admission process of 2026-28 based on CAT 2025 Scores, not the actual CAT percentile of candidates who receive calls. IIMB explicitly notes that the CAT scores of candidates called for interviews were higher.

So, a candidate should not treat 85 percentile as a safe IIM Bangalore target. It only makes the candidate eligible for consideration under the stated minimum criteria.

IIM Bangalore PI Shortlist Criteria and Weightage 2027

Once candidates clear the CAT-based minimum requirements, IIM Bangalore calculates a pre-PI score out of 100. CAT receives the highest weight at 55 points, followed by Class 10, Class 12 and bachelor's scores at 10 points each. Work experience/professional qualification carries 10 points and gender diversity carries 5 points.

The CAT component itself is divided across the three sections, with DILR receiving the highest weight.

After the PI shortlist, candidates appear for the Personal Interview and Written Ability Test. The WAT takes approximately 30 minutes and is evaluated on both the content and style of the written response.

The final post-PI score gives the greatest importance to the Personal Interview, which carries 40% weight, while CAT contributes 25% and WAT contributes 10%.

How Important Are Academics for IIM Bangalore Admission?

Academics are important at IIM Bangalore because Class 10, Class 12 and bachelor's performance are explicitly included in both the pre-PI and post-PI selection processes. At the pre-PI stage, each receives 10 points, while at the final stage each carries 5 points.

This means candidates with consistently strong academics can gain an advantage, particularly when CAT scores are similar. IIMB also standardises academic scores, so the evaluation is not simply based on raw percentages across different boards or institutions.

Therefore, a strong CAT score is important, but excellent academics can materially strengthen the overall profile.

How Important is Work Experience for IIM Bangalore Admissions?

Work experience plays an important role in the IIM Bangalore PGP 2027–29 admission process because it is considered at both the pre-PI shortlisting stage and the post-PI final selection stage. At the pre-PI stage, Work Experience/ Professional Course carries a weightage of 10 points out of 100.

After the interview, work experience continues to be considered, but IIM Bangalore also evaluates the quality of the candidate’s professional experience. Thus, having work experience can strengthen a candidate’s profile, but its duration as well as its quality become relevant during the admission process.

IIM Bangalore Work Experience Weightage: Pre-PI and Post-PI

Admission Stage

Work Experience Weightage

How It Is Considered

Pre-PI

10 points

Based on the number of months of eligible work experience

Post-PI

Pre-PI work-ex weight is scaled from 10 to 5 before quality adjustment

The scaled score is multiplied by the quality-of-work-experience score awarded by the interview panel

At the post-PI stage, the admission document states that the work experience weight assigned at pre-PI is scaled down from 10 to 5.

The interview panel evaluates the quality of work experience on a five-point scale with possible values of 0.25, 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2. The average quality score awarded by the panel is then multiplied by the scaled work experience score to determine the revised weighted work experience score.

How is the IIM Bangalore Work Experience Score Calculated?

For the pre-PI stage, IIM Bangalore uses the following formula:

Work Experience Score = 10 Γ— (x Γ· 36), where x = number of months of eligible work experience.

The score increases proportionately until 36 months. Candidates with 36 months or more receive the maximum pre-PI work experience score of 10.

IIM Bangalore Work Experience Cut-off Date

For the 2027–29 PGP admission cycle, eligible work experience is calculated up to 31 July 2026. The official document phrases this as work experience β€œup to July 2026”; it does not explicitly print β€œ31 July 2026,” so 31 July 2026 is the month-end interpretation of that stated cutoff.

IIM Bangalore does not count internships, unpaid work or apprenticeship periods such as articleship required as part of professional courses as eligible work experience.

IIM Bangalore Minimum CAT Percentile RTI Data

The IIM Bangalore RTI data provides an indication of the minimum CAT percentile among candidates who received final admission offers across different categories. These figures should not be confused with the qualifying CAT cutoffs published by IIM Bangalore, as the RTI data reflects the lowest percentile of an actually admitted/offered candidate in the respective admission cycle.

The data shows that the minimum percentile resulting in a final offer can vary considerably from year to year and across categories. For example, the minimum General-category percentile increased from 86.18 in CAT 2022 to 95.45 in CAT 2024.

However, these numbers should not be treated as expected or safe CAT cutoffs for IIM Bangalore. Final admission depends on multiple factors, including academic profile, work experience, diversity factors, PI performance and the institute's final composite score calculation.

IIM Bangalore has maintained a strong placement-to-fee ratio throughout the period. The average package increased from around β‚Ή28.98 LPA in 2021 to β‚Ή35.35 LPA in 2026, while the programme fee also increased over the period. On this simple package-to-fee calculation, the ROI has generally remained above 120%, with the 2024 batch showing the highest ratio in the table.

Important: This is a simplified ROI calculation and should not be interpreted as the time required to recover the MBA investment. Average CTC is not the same as take-home salary, while the actual cost of an MBA can also include mess expenses, personal expenses and the opportunity cost of two years away from employment.

IIM Bangalore Selection Criteria 2027: Conclusion

The IIM Bangalore Selection Criteria 2027 shows that admission is based on much more than a high CAT percentile. CAT carries the highest weight at the pre-PI stage, but academics, eligible work experience or professional qualifications and gender diversity also influence shortlisting. Candidates should therefore assess their complete profile rather than relying only on the published minimum CAT cutoff.

Once shortlisted, the focus changes significantly because the Personal Interview carries 40% of the final score, while CAT contributes 25% and WAT contributes 10%. Strong academics and relevant work experience continue to matter in the final stage as well. The key takeaway is simple: CAT can help you reach the IIM Bangalore interview, but your overall profile and PI performance can ultimately determine whether you convert the call.
