IIM Ahmedabad Selection Criteria 2027
What does it take to reach IIM Ahmedabad beyond a strong CAT score? For the 2027–29 batch, CAT carries 65% weight in the initial Composite Score, while Application Rating gets 35% weight. Your Class 10, Class 12, graduation marks, work experience, and gender diversity contribute to the Application Rating. The process then adds another layer through AWT and PI. The final score gives 50% weight to PI, 10% to AWT, and 40% to the normalized Composite Score. Understanding these numbers can help you see exactly where your profile matters.

IIM Ahmedabad Selection Process 2027: Stages
The IIM Ahmedabad selection process has two major phases. The first phase shortlists candidates for the Analytical Writing Test and Personal Interview.
The second phase uses AWT, PI, and the normalized Composite Score for final selection.
Following is the complete process of IIM Ahmedabad admission process:
IIMA independently prepares its AWT and PI shortlist. Therefore, receiving a call from another IIM does not guarantee an IIMA interview call.
IIM Ahmedabad Application Rating (AR) 2027
Application Rating is one of the most important parts of the IIM Ahmedabad first-stage selection process. It accounts for 35% of the raw Composite Score.
The 2027–29 policy calculates the raw Application Rating using five components.
Raw Application Rating = A + B + C + D + E
Component | What It Represents |
Rating Score A | Class 10 percentage |
Rating Score B | Class 12 percentage |
Rating Score C | Bachelor's degree percentage |
Rating Score D | Full-time work experience |
Rating Score E | Gender diversity |
The raw AR is then normalized using the average AR score of the top 50 applicants. This normalized AR receives 35% weight in the raw Composite Score.
IIM Ahmedabad Academic Weightage 2027
Class 10, Class 12, and graduation marks each receive rating points. The same percentage slabs are used for Rating Scores A, B, and C.
Percentage | Rating Score |
55% or below | 1 |
Above 55% to 60% | 2 |
Above 60% to 70% | 3 |
Above 70% to 80% | 5 |
Above 80% to 90% | 8 |
Above 90% | 10 |
This means you can receive up to 10 points each for Class 10, Class 12, and graduation.
Your academic contribution can therefore reach 30 points before work experience and gender diversity points are added.
IIMA also considers all subjects appearing on your Class 10 and Class 12 marksheets while determining the percentage.
For graduation, the percentage awarded by your university is treated as final. If the university does not provide a percentage, IIMA calculates it using the marks available across the relevant semesters.
IIM Ahmedabad Work Experience and Gender Diversity Weightage
Work experience receives up to 5 points, while non-male candidates receive 3 gender diversity points.
Full-Time Work Experience | Rating Score D |
Less than 12 months | 0 |
12 to 36 months | 0.20 × (Months − 11) |
More than 36 months | 5 |
For example, 12 months of work experience gives 0.2 points, while 24 months gives 2.6 points.
Work experience beyond 36 months does not increase the score further because the maximum Rating Score D is 5.
Gender | Rating Score E |
Non-male candidates | 3 |
Male candidates | 0 |
Therefore, the maximum raw Application Rating is 38 points.
30 academic points + 5 work experience points + 3 gender diversity points = 38 points

IIM Ahmedabad Composite Score Calculation 2027
The Composite Score determines the major part of the AWT and PI shortlist.
For 2027–29, IIMA gives 35% weight to normalized Application Rating and 65% weight to CAT total percentile.
Component | Weightage |
Normalized Application Rating | 35% |
CAT total percentile | 65% |
Total | 100% |
The formula is:
Raw Composite Score = 0.35 × Normalized Application Rating + 0.65 × (CAT total percentile ÷ 100)
The normalized AR is calculated by dividing your raw AR by the average AR score of the top 50 applicants.
This makes CAT the larger factor at the first stage. However, your academic record, work experience, and gender diversity still influence the remaining 35%.
The raw Composite Score is then normalized according to your undergraduate discipline.
IIM Ahmedabad Undergraduate Discipline-Wise Normalization
IIMA does not compare every undergraduate background through one common academic benchmark. Your raw Composite Score is normalized within your undergraduate field or discipline.
The 2027–29 policy lists the following disciplines:
Undergraduate Discipline Categories | |
Fashion & Design | Hospitality & Food Sciences |
Computer Science & IT | Architecture & Planning |
Commerce, Accounting & Finance | Journalism & Media |
Medical & Health Sciences | Life Sciences |
Statistics & Actuarial Science | Law |
Economics | Engineering & Technology |
Agriculture & Allied Sciences | Mathematics |
Social Sciences | Management |
Arts & Humanities | Others |
Professional (CA/CS/ICWA/FIAI) | Pure Sciences |
The normalized Composite Score is calculated using the average of the top 1% raw Composite Scores within your undergraduate discipline.
However, IIMA applies a minimum of 5 and maximum of 100 raw Composite Scores when identifying the top 1% pool.
This discipline-wise normalization prevents direct comparison between vastly different academic backgrounds.
If you have more than one undergraduate degree from different disciplines, IIMA calculates separate raw Composite Scores. The highest normalized score is then considered for AWT and PI shortlisting.
IIM Ahmedabad CAT Cutoff 2026 for PGP 2027–29
Meeting the CAT cutoff is mandatory, but it does not itself guarantee an AWT or PI call. The 2027–29 policy gives separate overall and sectional percentile requirements for non-PwD and PwD candidates.
Category | Non-PwD Overall | Non-PwD Sectional | PwD Overall | PwD Sectional |
General, EWS | 95 | 85 | 85 | 75 |
NC-OBC | 90 | 80 | 80 | 70 |
SC | 85 | 75 | 75 | 65 |
ST | 75 | 65 | 65 | 55 |
The IIM Ahmedabad CAT sectional cutoff applies separately to VARC, DILR, and QA.
These are minimum qualifying cutoffs. The actual Composite Score required for a call can differ based on the applicant pool and score distribution.
IIMA also reserves the right to change the stated cutoffs when the applicant pool requires it.

IIM Ahmedabad AWT and PI Shortlisting Process 2027
After applying the CAT cutoffs, IIMA prepares the AWT and PI shortlist. Reservation categories are represented according to the applicable rules.
- The shortlisted candidates can appear for AWT and PI in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, or New Delhi.
- You need to select two preferred cities in the CAT application form.
- The shortlist is expected to be available on the IIMA website by the second week of January 2027, after CAT results are published.
- The AWT evaluates your written expression and ability to develop a clear argument. The PI then assesses your academic background, experiences, awareness, achievements, goals, and personal qualities.
- IIMA does not publish individual AWT or PI performance details. It also retains discretion regarding the weights assigned to different attributes assessed during the interview.
- Therefore, there is no separate published percentage for every PI attribute such as communication, leadership, awareness, or career clarity.
IIM Ahmedabad Final Selection Criteria 2027
After AWT and PI, IIMA calculates the Final Composite Score (FCS). The 2027–29 policy gives the highest weight to the Personal Interview.
Final Selection Component | Weightage |
Personal Interview | 50% |
Analytical Writing Test | 10% |
Normalized Composite Score | 40% |
Total | 100% |
The formula is:
FCS = 0.50 × Normalized PI Score + 0.10 × Normalized AWT Score + 0.40 × Normalized Composite Score
This changes the balance considerably from the first stage.
CAT and your profile drive the initial shortlist, while PI becomes the strongest component during final selection.
The final selection is conducted separately across reservation categories. IIMA also considers academic performance, co-curricular achievements, extracurricular achievements, work experience, CAT performance, AWT, and PI performance.
This means a high CAT percentile alone cannot guarantee an admission offer.
IIM Ahmedabad Selection Process 2027: Important Dates

IIM Ahmedabad Selection Process 2027: Conclusion
The IIM Ahmedabad Selection Criteria 2027 makes it clear that admission is not determined by CAT performance alone. CAT plays the larger role during initial shortlisting, while academics, work experience and gender diversity contribute through the Application Rating. Understanding these components can help candidates assess where their profiles stand before the AWT-PI stage.
Once shortlisted, the importance of interview performance rises substantially, with PI carrying the largest stated weight in final selection. CAT aspirants should therefore focus on achieving a competitive score while also preparing their profile, written communication and interview skills. The key takeaway is simple: getting into IIM Ahmedabad requires performance across multiple stages, not just one exceptional CAT score.
