Condition for Perpendicular Lines

## Formula

Two non-vertical lines are perpendicular if:

$$m_1m_2=-1$$

## Usage

- Used to test whether two straight lines are perpendicular.

Question 1

The hypotenuse of a right-angled isosceles triangle lies along the line $$4x + 3y = 5$$. Let $$V$$ be the vertex opposite to the hypotenuse. If the reflection of $$V$$ with respect to the line $$2x + 3y = 5$$ is $$V'(-1, -2)$$, then the equations of the two perpendicular sides of the triangle are:

Question 2

Two equal sides of an isosceles triangle lie along the lines $$-x + 2y = 4$$ and $$x + y = 4$$. If $$m$$ is the slope of its third side, then the sum of all possible distinct values of $$m$$ is:

Question 3

A variable line passes through the fixed point of intersection of the two lines $$x + 2y - 3 = 0$$ and $$2x - y - 1 = 0$$. If the perpendicular distance from the origin to this variable line is maximized, then the equation of the line can be written as $$ax + by + c = 0$$ where $$a,b$$ are natural numbers with no common factor other than 1. The value of the expression $$a^2 + b^2 - c^2$$ is equal to:
