Top 20 NMAT 2026 Time and Work Questions
Time and Work is one of the most predictable topics in the NMAT Quantitative Skills section. The section has 36 questions to be solved in 52 minutes, and Time and Work, including Pipes and Cisterns, usually accounts for 1 to 2 of them. Since NMAT has no negative marking, every Time and Work question you solve quickly and correctly adds directly to your scaled score.
Most NMAT Time and Work questions rest on one idea: work done = rate × time. Around it sit a few standard patterns, such as people working together, someone leaving midway, working on alternate days, efficiency comparisons, men-women-children problems, wages, and pipes filling or emptying a tank. Once you can spot the pattern, the question reduces to one or two lines of calculation.
NMAT is a computer-adaptive test, so a strong start in arithmetic topics like Time and Work helps you reach higher-difficulty questions. These questions also reward a fixed method, which makes them ideal for saving time that you can spend on Data Interpretation later.
Try to solve 10 to 15 Time and Work questions daily, mixing basic two-person questions, pipe questions, wage questions and Data Sufficiency questions. This builds the pattern recognition you need to finish the Quant section on time.
Top 20 NMAT Time and Work Questions PDF
A single NMAT Time and Work Questions PDF lets you practise every important pattern in one place instead of hunting through books and websites. It also makes last-minute revision quick, since the formulas and solved examples sit together.
This PDF covers combined work, pairwise work of three people, efficiency ratios, people leaving or joining midway, alternate-day work, the man-days formula, men-women and men-boys problems, wages, pipes and cisterns with leaks and outlets, and an NMAT-style Data Sufficiency question. Every question comes with a step-by-step solution so you can check both your answer and your method.
Solve the questions in a timed setting, aiming for about 1.5 minutes per question. After each set, go through the solutions and note where the LCM method or a shortcut could have saved time. Revisit the questions you got wrong after a few days to make sure the concept has stuck.
How to Solve These Top 20 NMAT Time and Work Questions
Here are some methods that can help you solve NMAT Time and Work questions quickly and accurately:
Use the LCM method instead of fractions: Take total work as the LCM of the given days. If A takes 12 days and B takes 18 days, total work = 36 units, so A does 3 units/day and B does 2 units/day. This removes fractions from almost every question.
Think in rates, not days: Days cannot be added, but rates can. Combined rate = sum of individual rates, and time = total work ÷ combined rate.
Learn the key results by heart:
- Work = Rate × Time, and Rate = 1 ÷ (days to finish alone)
- If A takes x days and B takes y days, together they take xy ÷ (x + y) days
- If A+B, B+C and C+A take x, y and z days, then 2(A + B + C) = 1/x + 1/y + 1/z
- If A is k times as efficient as B, A takes 1/k of the time B takes
- Man-days formula: (M1 × D1 × H1) ÷ W1 = (M2 × D2 × H2) ÷ W2
- Wages are shared in the ratio of work done, not time spent
- Pipes: a filling pipe adds work, an outlet or leak subtracts it. Leak rate = (rate without leak) − (rate with leak)
Track who works on which days: When someone leaves early or joins late, write the days each person actually worked. For example, if A leaves 5 days before the end, A works (T − 5) days while B works T days.
Use cycles for alternate-day questions: Find the work done in one full cycle, count how many full cycles fit, then handle the leftover work day by day. Never divide total work by the average rate directly.
Convert people into one unit: In men-women-children questions, equate the two given situations to find a ratio like 1 man = 3 women. Then express everyone in the same unit.
Check options smartly: NMAT gives five options. If an answer must be more than the faster person's time, or a whole number, eliminate options that break that logic.
For Data Sufficiency, do not solve fully: You only need to know whether a unique answer exists. Stop as soon as you can tell a statement is or is not enough.
Question 1
Time required by two pipes A and B working separately to fill a tank is 36 seconds and 45 seconds respectively. Another pipe C can empty the tank in 30 seconds. Initially, A and Bare opened and after 7 seconds, C is also opened. In how much more time the tank would be completely filled?
correct answer:- 2
