Trigonometric Substitution for $$\sqrt{x^2-a^2}$$

Put:

$$x=a\sec\theta$$

then:

$$\sqrt{x^2-a^2}=a\tan\theta$$

and:

$$dx=a\sec\theta\tan\theta\,d\theta$$

- Used to eliminate radicals of the form $$\sqrt{x^2-a^2}$$.
