Trigonometric Substitution for $$\sqrt{a^2+x^2}$$

Put:

$$x=a\tan\theta$$

then:

$$\sqrt{a^2+x^2}=a\sec\theta$$

and:

$$dx=a\sec^2\theta\,d\theta$$

- Used to eliminate radicals of the form $$\sqrt{a^2+x^2}$$.
