Anomers

Rarely Tested

Diastereomers differing only in the configuration at the anomeric carbon ($$\text{C-1}$$ in aldoses, $$\text{C-2}$$ in ketoses).

  • $$\alpha$$ -anomer: $$\text{--OH}$$ at $$\text{C-1}$$ is cis to $$\text{--OH}$$ at $$\text{C-2}$$ (down in Haworth projection).
  • $$\beta$$ -anomer: $$\text{--OH}$$ at $$\text{C-1}$$ is trans to $$\text{--OH}$$ at $$\text{C-2}$$ (up in Haworth projection).
Question 1

A known artificial sweetener X is composed of 4-chloro-4-deoxy-$$\alpha$$-D-galactose and 1,6-dichloro-1,6-dideoxy-$$\beta$$-D-fructose joined by a glycosidic linkage. Structure of D-galactose is given below (Fischer projection):
