What is the value of the 2-digit number ab?
A. The difference between its digits is 4.
B. The sum of its digits is 4.

Solution

Let the digits of the number be $$x$$ and $$y$$

Clearly, each statement alone is not sufficient as there can be many possibilities. By combining the above statements, we get :

=> $$x+y=4$$ and $$x-y=4$$

By solving above equations, we get : $$x=4$$ and $$y=0$$, thus number = 40

$$\therefore$$ Both statements together are sufficient.
