JEE Advanced Marks vs Rank 2026

The JEE Advanced 2026 examination is expected to be held on 17th May 2026 and will likely be conducted by IIT Delhi under the guidance of the Joint Admission Board (JAB). While discussing admission benchmarks like JEE Mains Cutoff 2026, it is important to note that unlike JEE Main, JEE Advanced does not use a percentile system; instead, it follows an absolute ranking system based on total marks.

JEE Advanced consists of two papers (Paper 1 and Paper 2), each carrying approximately 180 marks, making the total marks 360. The marks vs rank relationship varies each year depending on the difficulty level of the paper and overall candidate performance.

As the official results for 2026 are not yet released, the following estimates are based on JEE Advanced 2025 data (IIT Kanpur) and previous year trends.

JEE Advanced 2026 Marks vs Rank Table

The following table gives the expected rank ranges in the Common Rank List (CRL) as well as category-specific rank lists in JEE Advanced 2026 in various score bands. This is projected on the official data of JEE Advanced 2025 which is issued by IIT Kanpur and has been based on the historical trends. JEE Advanced 2026 has a total of 360 marks with each paper having 180 marks in Physics, Chemistry and mathematics.Β

JEE Advanced Rank for 50, 100, 150, 200 Marks

The applicants frequently enquire about the rank that they may obtain by scoring certain marks. Below are the individual scores and their corresponding ranks according to the General (CRL) category:

  • 50 Marks: Typically below the qualifying cutoff for General category candidates and may not result in a CRL rank. However, reserved category candidates may still qualify depending on cutoff trends.
  • 100 Marks: Usually corresponds to a CRL rank of approximately 12,000 – 18,000. Chances of getting IITs are limited for General category candidates but possible in newer IITs for reserved categories.
  • 150 Marks: Generally corresponds to a CRL rank of around 5,000 – 8,000. Candidates may get mid or newer IITs with branches like Civil, Chemical, or Metallurgical Engineering.
  • 200 Marks: Typically results in a CRL rank between 1,500 – 2,500 (depending on difficulty). Candidates have good chances of getting branches in older IITs, though top branches remain highly competitive.

This is merely the range and does not give any assurance. Depending on the level of difficulty of the JEE Advanced 2026 exam, the ranking of the individual score may vary anywhere between 500 to 1000 ranks.

Marks Required for Top 100, 500, 1000 in JEE Advanced 2026

There exists stiff competition among the JEE Advanced top rankers. Even one point between hundreds of candidates in the top 1,000 people means that it is highly important to optimise the results in all three subjects. The following are what to aim at each rank of milestones, depending on 2025 official data and trends over many years:

  • Top 100 (AIR 1- 100): The candidate should get 300 marks and above in order to secure a place within the top 100 in CRL. In the JEE advanced 2025, the first 100 ranks were secured by more than 300 marks and the overall topper got a score of 332/360. For 2024, the overall topper had a score of 348 and for 2023, it was 343.Students targeting top 10 ranks would need to achieve more than 320 marks.
  • Top 500 (AIR 101- 500): To make a position within the top 500, candidates should score between 270 to 300 marks. The rough cut off for the rank of AIR 500 in the general category for 2025 is around 270 marks. This includes flagship disciplines such as Computer Science and Electrical Engineering in old IITs like IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, and IIT Kharagpur.
  • Top 1000 (AIR 501- 1000): It requires around 240-270 marks to make it into the top 1,000. For 2025, the cut-off mark for AIR 1,000 was around 240 marks, while for 2024, it was just above 230-250 marks. At even this level, all five best IIT core streams will be accessible, and you will have a good chance of landing Computer Science at IITs like IIT Roorkee or IIT BHU.

As far as the OBC-NCL category students are concerned, the number of marks required to secure positions 100, 500, and 1000 is approximately 20 to 30 marks below their CRL counterparts. In the case of SC and ST students, the cutoff marks are much lower because of the low qualifying percentage of approximately 10.28%.

What is a Good Score in JEE Advanced 2026 for IIT Admission?

A 'good score' in JEE Advanced is relative and depends heavily on which IIT and which branch a candidate is aiming for. That said, there are broadly accepted benchmarks:

  • Minimum Qualifying Score: Varies every year based on difficulty. For reference, in 2025, the cutoff dropped to around 74 marks (~20.56%) for General category.
  • Entry-Level IIT Score: Around 100–120 marks may provide limited chances in newer IITs (not guaranteed for General category).
  • Comfortable Score for IITs: 150–200 marks offers better chances across newer and some mid-tier IITs.
  • Strong Score for Old IITs: 200+ marks improves chances of getting core branches in older IITs.
  • Top Rank Score: 300+ marks is typically required for a top 100 rank and top branches like CSE in premier IITs.

Candidates should always refer to the official JoSAA opening and closing rank data from JoSAA.nic.in to identify exact cutoffs for their target institute and branch before setting their score goals.

Some of the main conclusions of the data above. First, an apparent difference in the number of marks needed in the same rank on a year-by-year basis is due to the changing difficulty of papers. Physics in 2022 A difficult Physics paper pushed aggregate scores downwards, therefore lower marks earned better ranks than in 2021. Second, the 2025 cutoff decreased drastically to 20.56% aggregate (equivalent to around 74 marks) in the General category, compared to the cutoff of around 109 marks in 2024, mainly due to the fact that JEE Advanced 2025 was deemed to be more difficult, especially in Physics and Mathematics. Third, the topper has scored 314-348 in the last five years, which proves that high scores of 300 or higher are very difficult to achieve and a candidate who scores in this range is already in an elite company.

In the case of JEE Advanced 2026, assuming that the level of difficulty is similar to that of 2025, the distribution of marks vs rank is likely to be roughly equal to that of 2025. But, with the paper being less difficult the cutoffs and rank limits will move upwards. It is recommended that the candidates have a target of 200 marks a minimum and go beyond that, depending on their branch and IIT preferences.

Keep track of the official announcements of IIT Delhi (organizing institute of JEE Advanced 2026) at jeeadv.ac.in and consult JoSAA official seat pattern and round-wise cutoff information at josaa.nic.in to plan correctly the admission.

JEE Advanced Marks vs Rank 2026: Conclusion

JEE Advanced 2026 marks vs rank plays a crucial role in helping aspirants set realistic targets and plan their IIT admission strategy effectively. Since the exam follows an absolute ranking system, even small differences in marks can lead to significant rank changes. Based on previous years’ trends, scoring above 200 marks can place candidates in a strong position for IIT admissions, while 300+ marks are typically required for top ranks. Understanding these benchmarks allows candidates to align their preparation with their desired IIT and branch.

However, candidates must remember that the marks vs rank relationship changes every year depending on the difficulty level of the exam. A tougher paper can lower cutoff marks, while an easier paper may push rank thresholds higher. Therefore, instead of focusing only on rank predictions, aspirants should aim for maximizing their scores across all subjects. Regularly tracking updates from IIT Delhi and counselling data from JoSAA will help in making informed decisions during the admission process.
