IIT Closing Ranks 2026

IIT admission is the aspiration of lakhs of students giving the JEE Advanced entrance test each year. But passing JEE Advanced is only half the battle won; the real test starts from then onward when you take part in JoSAA counseling and try to find out which IIT and branch suits you according to your AIR score. At this point, the idea of IIT closing ranks becomes important for you.

IIT Closing Ranks (Branch-Wise List)

However, to understand the concept better, let us first understand the jargon used in JoSAA counseling:

Closing Rank: The highest AIR at which the seat was allotted in the Final Round (Sixth Round) for any given combination of IIT, branch, and category. Closing Rank is what we often talk about when we speak of getting into an IIT with a certain ranking.

The difference between opening and closing ranks in IIT admissions can be quite large, showing how competitive top branches are. For example, IIT Bombay CSE may open at rank 1 but close around rank 66 for the general category. This gap highlights the high demand for such courses in the Top 10 IIT Colleges. Only top rankers prefer these branches, and since seats are limited, they get filled very quickly. Even a small difference in rank can greatly affect admission chances.

Following is a snapshot of some highly popular branches in the most renowned IITs, with their closing ranks

IIT Wise Closing Ranks 2026

As JoSAA 2026 counselling will be based on JEE Advanced 2026 (to take place in May 2026), the official ranking is not announced. But past years JoSAA statistics are a good estimate. The following is what can be expected institute-wise:

IIT Bombay

It is considered One of the best IITs in CSE. In 2025, the CSE absolute positioning of the General group is 66, and Electrical Engineering will be 433. The other engineering branch had a close ranking between 500 and 1200 like Engineering Physics and Aerospace Engineering and it was a good choice among students with moderately lower ranking.

IIT Delhi

In 2025, CSE at IIT Delhi had a rank of 126 in the General category in Round 6. One of its newer programs, Mathematics and Computing, shut down at 323. In the case of the majority of the branches, IIT Delhi closing ranks fall between AIR 99 and 6690.

IIT Madras

IIT Madras CSE ranks as one of the top institutes in India by NIRF and ranked at 171 in 2025. Closing performs well in designing programs in Engineering Design and Data Science, and it is becoming more competitive each year.

IIT Kanpur

IIT Kanpur CSE is known to have a high research culture, which has had a closing rank of 270 in 2025. Recent programming languages such as Mathematics and Scientific Computing are also popular with the high rankers seeking quantitative disciplines.

IIT Kharagpur

IIT Kharagpur, with one of the largest campuses and the oldest IIT, CSE at this institute is only ranked in the 300s in 2025. It has an extremely broad scope of programs such as integrated M.Tech and dual degree.

IIT Previous Year Closing Rank Trends

The best strategy is working out the benchmarks in comparison with the previous year to forecast the positions of the 2026 closing in the ranking. These are the CSE closing rank trends of top IITs (General category, Round 6) which are based on JoSAA data at josaa.nic.in:

The overall trend indicates that the best IIT CSE closing ranks have been steadily improving by 5-30 ranks annually. This can be partially attributed to the rising students and the number of candidates who qualify JEE Advanced. Other brands such as AI and Data Science exhibit more acute upward streams, as they are influenced by the desires of students in accordance with the industry needs.

IIT Rank vs College List

Among the most viable queries that students may possess is: what IIT can I secure depending on my JEE Advanced AIR? The table below cross rates estimated ranges of ranks to realistic IIT selection (General category, CSE branch, in reference to 2025 closing ranks):

JEE Advanced 2026 Closing Ranks for IIT Admissions

The JEE Advanced 2026 is scheduled for May 18, 2026, with results expected in June 2026. It will be followed by JoSAA 2026 counselling, and seat allocation rounds will probably start in late June or July 2026. The official IIT closing rank 2026 will only be disclosed once the last Round 6 of JoSAA 2026 on josaa.nic.in.

So far, here's how to derive past data to estimate your chances:

In the case of general category candidates: Aim at a rank which will ensure you are not ranked below the 2025 Round 6 closing rank of your desired IIT and branch. Allow a buffer of at least 100-300 ranks as a safety measure.

In case of the candidates / applicant under the reserved category (OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS): apply the category-specific closing ranks. Case in point, OBC-NCL closing ranks in 2025 IIT Bombay CSE will have been approximately 54, and SC closing ranks will be approximately 31. These are not more absolute ones as the pool of categories is more competitive as well.

Female supernumerary seats: IITs and NITs also have extra female seats on offer over strength sanctioned. These seats have distinct, less competitive, generally, closing ranks and are valuable to include in your plan.

Factors Affecting IIT Closing Ranks in JoSAA Counselling

IIT closing ranks are not fixed. They shift each year based on a combination of factors. Understanding these helps you read trend data more accurately and build a realistic college list.

Difficulty Level of JEE Advanced

A difficult exam would mean lower marks and hence compression of rank order towards the top end. Cut off ranks at IIT Delhi have been seen to be declining in certain years as a result of the increased difficulty of the test, which resulted in lower scores overall.

Number of Qualified Candidates

Every year about 1.5 to 1.7 lakh students are eligible to JEE Advanced. The figure of the actual individuals that turn up and are positioned in a valid rank gives a direct result on the level of competition in the counselling pool. Closing ranks of mid tiers in IIT can be extruded by more competent candidates (those with moderate levels).

Seat Matrix Changes

IITs periodically add new programs or increase seats in existing ones. For instance, the introduction of AI & Data Science or BS-MS programs at several IITs added new options. More seats in a branch typically ease closing ranks for that specific program.

Branch Popularity Trends

Industry trends shape student preferences. The surge in interest for AI, Data Science, and Mathematics & Computing branches has pushed their closing ranks upward sharply in recent years. Meanwhile, branches like Metallurgy and Civil Engineering tend to have more relaxed cutoffs, making them viable entry points into older, prestigious IITs for candidates who can branch-change after first year.

JoSAA Round and Float/Slide/Freeze Strategy

Closing ranks are officially determined by Round 6 data. However, intermediate rounds can look very different. Many candidates use the float and slide options to upgrade their seat across rounds. This means candidates who locked a branch in Round 2 might upgrade to a better branch or IIT by Round 5, freeing up seats. Tracking round-wise closing ranks from josaa.nic.in helps candidates decide whether to wait or freeze.

Category and Gender Pool

Closing ranks vary significantly across GEN, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS, and PwD categories, and between gender-neutral and female-only pools. JoSAA publishes separate closing ranks for each combination. Candidates should always check their specific category data rather than relying on General category numbers.

IIT Closing Ranks 2026: Conclusion

IIT Closing Ranks 2026 will be an important tool to aid students in making a better choice when counselling during JoSAA. As one must be admitted based on the rank and preference of the branch, it would be vital to know what are the expected ranks of closing, historical trends, competition, etc. Even a difference in ranking can affect your prospects of joining the best IITs or even your favorite branch such as CSE.

To increase your likelihood, strive to establish the right targets in accordance with past year closing rankings and maintain a comfortable margin as options are filled. A smart counselling plan involving float, slide and freeze options can also enable you to get a better seat in addition to preparation. Students can optimize their chances of getting IIT admissions with the proper planning and awareness of the cutoff patterns.
