Begin with research on previous year cutoffs of your target institutes and programs. Research past 3 to 4 years to learn about the trends of varying levels of ranks over time as some branches may have steady need while others change drastically. Making fill decisions based on decreasing priority, not by cutoff ranks. Even when the odds appear so small, your dream college should be at the top of the list.
Keep a concoction of options that comprise the best of the best institutions that are within your reach, safety nets in the mid-range ones, and a couple of stretch institutions. Incorporate combination of old, new, IITs, NITs and other involved institutes. The geography preferences are not insignificant either because the cost of living, climate, and distance to the home are the parameters that should be taken into account.
The most common round 1 choice filling begins mid-June and ends four days later. Locking deadline is immediately after. give time to plan and have it ready ahead of schedule. You can modify preferences between rounds, and have brief modification windows with which to do so. The placement of such windows should be based on the analysis of seats that were not occupied during the previous rounds.

JoSAA Counselling Process (Step-by-Step Guide)
Understanding each step of the JoSAA process helps you stay prepared and avoid last-minute confusion. Here is a clear walkthrough:
Step 1: Check Eligibility
JEE Main candidates must have a valid ranking in JEE Main 2026 and qualify with minimum marks in class 12 exams. General category students must score 50% in total marks, and students belonging to SC/ST/PwD categories must secure 45%. For IITs, candidates must qualify for JEE Main and secure a position within the top 2.5 lakh aspirants in order to appear in the JEE Advanced test. There is also an age limit of October 1, 2001.
Step 2: Register on the JoSAA Portal
Log in using your JEE credentials, fill in personal and academic details, upload documents, and pay the registration fee. Keep your transaction ID saved.
Step 3: Fill and Lock Choices
Add up to 2,000 or more college-branch combinations in your preferred order. Modify as many times as needed before the deadline, then lock your choices before the cutoff time.
Step 4: Seat Allocation
Your ranking, category, preferences, and availability of seats are all taken into consideration at once. The results are declared round-by-round. Your ranking in JEE Advanced gives you IITs, whereas your ranking in JEE Mains gets you NITs/IIITs/GFTIs.
Step 5: Respond to Seat Offer
There are three choices after every allocation. Floating will enable you to qualify for a better seat in future rounds but will keep your existing seat as well. Sliding will give you an opportunity to upgrade your seat to another branch within the same college. Freezing will fix your existing seat but will exclude you from future rounds.
Step 6: Pay Seat Acceptance Fee
Pay the seat acceptance fee in the range of Rs. 40,000 β 45,000 within 2-3 days of seat allotment. This amount will be included in your first-semester fee. Non-payment of the fee will automatically lead to forfeiture of your seat.
Step 7: Document Verification and Reporting
Verify your documents completely through the portal. Reporting physically is usually not necessary, although some institutions may ask you to do so. All documents should correspond with what was provided when registering.

JoSAA Seat Allotment 2026
Your rank, category, and options filled determine the JoSAA seat allotment process. This process analyzes all the applicants at once, starting with higher ranks. At a certain rank level, category quota becomes important.
The seat chart reflects the number of seats available in colleges and branches according to categories. Having an understanding of the seat matrix will help you determine your prospects. 49.5 percent seats are available for general category students while reserved categories have fixed quotas:
Category | Reservation Percentage |
General | 49.5% |
SC | 15% |
ST | 7.5% |
OBC-NCL | 27% |
EWS | 10% |
PwD | 5% (horizontal reservation) |
Gender-neutral and female-only seats are also available under each category. If female-only seats are not filled up, then they are considered gender-neutral seats.
The home state quota is an important criterion for getting admission to NITs. 50% of the seats in NITs are reserved for candidates belonging to the state in which the college is located. In contrast, there is no state quota for other central institutions, such as the IITs.
It is essential to note the opening and closing ranks of each category from past years' data. They provide an idea about what ranks will be suitable for admission to specific colleges and departments. The ranks keep changing every year depending on the paper and students' performances.
After every allocation round, candidates who get seats can opt for Float, Slide, and Freeze options. Any seat that is not taken by candidates due to upgrades or withdrawal in any round will again go back to the list of available seats. Thus, there could be chances of better seats in later rounds.
Preparing for JoSAA counseling is much easier when it is done in a step-by-step manner. Always organize yourself according to the deadlines, register yourself properly, choose your preferences wisely, and get your documents in order. Proper preparation at this stage would help you get your preferred seat in 2026.
