JoSAA 2026 Rounds, Dates, Process & Seat Allotment

JoSAA 2026 Rounds

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority conducts JoSAA counselling 2026, which manages the centralised seat allocation process for admission to IITs, IISc Bengaluru, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs, covering 138 participating institutes in total. The 2026 cycle includes exactly five rounds of seat allotment, from Round 1 on June 13 to the final Round 5 on July 16, 2026.

Each round releases fresh seat allotment results, gives candidates the opportunity to upgrade to a higher-preference seat, and requires mandatory online reporting within a fixed window. Understanding how the rounds work, when each key deadline falls, and how the Freeze, Float, and Slide options affect outcomes is critical for every candidate navigating JoSAA counselling 2026.

JoSAA 2026 Round Dates

JoSAA 2026 is running 5 rounds of seat allotment, with each round serving a distinct purpose in the progression from first allotment to final admission. Round 1 produces the most competitive closing ranks; each subsequent round relaxes closing ranks progressively as candidates with better-ranked preferences confirm and vacate their lower-preference choices.

Round

Allotment Date

Who Gets Allotted

Key Characteristic

Round 1

June 13, 2026

First allotments for all registered candidates based on rank, choices, and seat availability.

Most competitive closing ranks of all rounds; many top-ranked candidates hold multiple preferences simultaneously.

Round 2

June 30, 2026

Candidates who Floated from Round 1, plus new allotments from vacated seats.

First significant relaxation in NIT and IIIT closing ranks as some Round 1 allottees upgrade to preferred IIT seats.

Round 3

July 6, 2026

Further upgrades for Floating candidates; new allotments from Round 2 vacancies.

Mid-cycle; meaningful relaxation at NITs and IIITs; most upgrade activity concentrated here.

Round 4

July 10, 2026

Final upgrade opportunities before IIT/IISc withdrawal window closes.

IIT/IISc candidates must decide; withdrawal window (July 11 to 14) closes before Round 5 begins.

Round 5

July 16, 2026

Final allotments from all remaining vacancies; no further JoSAA rounds after this.

Most relaxed closing ranks; final for IITs and IISc; NIT+ candidates pay PAF after this round.

Note: IIT and IISc closing rank movement: Unlike NIT and IIIT closing ranks, which relax by 8% to 15% from Round 1 to Round 5, IIT CSE closing ranks at top institutes (IIT Bombay, Delhi, Madras) show minimal movement across all rounds because top-ranked candidates universally prefer these seats and very few candidates ranked in that band vacate them by upgrading out.

JoSAA Counselling Rounds 2026

Each JoSAA counselling round follows the same four-step structure: seat allotment is released, candidates check their allotment, pay the Seat Acceptance Fee (SAF) if not already paid, upload or confirm documents, and select a willingness option before the reporting window closes.

The SAF is ₹30,000 for General/OBC-NCL/EWS candidates and ₹15,000 for SC/ST/PwD candidates. Candidates who choose Float or Slide do not pay the SAF again in subsequent rounds; the fee paid in the first allotment round carries forward until the final allotment.

Option

What It Does

When to Use It

Effect on SAF

Freeze

Accepts current allotment and opts out of all further rounds permanently.

When you are fully satisfied with the allotted seat and want to lock it in.

SAF already paid is credited to the institute's admission fee; no further payment needed.

Float

Accepts current seat as a fallback but remains open to higher preferences across any institute.

When you want to try for a better institute or branch without losing your current seat.

SAF paid carries forward; no additional SAF payment required in subsequent rounds.

Slide

Accepts the allotted institute but requests a better branch within the same institute in subsequent rounds.

When you love the college but prefer a different engineering stream or programme there.

SAF paid carries forward; the institute is locked, only the branch can change.

Withdraw / Exit

Permanently exits the JoSAA counselling process; the current seat is forfeited.

Only when firmly decided against joining any JoSAA-listed institute this year. Irreversible.

₹7,000 non-refundable processing charge is deducted; remaining SAF is refunded.

JoSAA 2026 Counselling Process

The complete JoSAA 2026 counselling process runs from registration on June 2 through final admission formalities in late July. The key stages are:

  • Registration and choice filling (June 2 to 11): Candidates register on josaa.nic.in and fill a priority-ordered list of institute and programme choices. There is no penalty for filling more choices; candidates should aim for 40 to 80 choices across all three tiers (dream, target, safe) for maximum allotment probability.
  • Mock allotments (June 8 and 10): Two non-binding mock allotments show candidates where their current choice list would land them. Use both to refine and reorder preferences before the June 11 locking deadline.
  • Round-wise allotments (June 13 to July 16): Five rounds of seat allotment, each followed by a 3 to 4-day reporting window. Candidates must act within every window they receive an allotment.
  • IIT/IISc withdrawal window (July 11 to 14): The only window to withdraw from an accepted IIT or IISc seat before Round 5 begins. No withdrawal is possible once Round 5 is released on July 16.
  • Round 5 and final reporting (July 16 to 20): The final round after which all IIT and IISc allotments are frozen — no withdrawal is possible for these institutes once Round 5 releases. NIT+ candidates (NITs, IIITs, GFTIs) may still initiate a seat withdrawal or exit during this window (July 16 to July 20) before PAF payment, which enables them to enter CSAB Special Rounds. Final data reconciliation concludes on July 21, 2026.
  • Physical joining: Candidates report to the allotted institute with original documents as per the joining schedule published by the institute. The timeline and fee schedule are governed by the individual institute after JoSAA concludes.

How Many Rounds Are Expected in JoSAA 2026?

JoSAA 2026 is running exactly 5 rounds of seat allotment, confirmed in the official schedule at josaa.nic.in. Previous cycles have varied between 5 and 6 rounds; the 2026 cycle is fixed at 5. Round 5 on July 16, 2026 is the final round for all 138 participating institutes, including all 23 IITs and IISc Bengaluru. After Round 5, any vacant seats in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs are handled by CSAB Special Rounds; IITs and IISc do not participate in CSAB.

Note: Why 5 rounds is sufficient: By Round 5, the vast majority of IIT seats and all premium NIT CSE seats are filled. The incremental closing rank relaxation from a potential Round 6 would be minimal at top institutes. CSAB then handles remaining NIT+ vacancies more efficiently through its own process.

Can You Upgrade Your Seat in Later JoSAA Rounds?

Yes, upgrading is one of the most important features of the JoSAA system and is the primary reason candidates should Float rather than Freeze unless completely satisfied with their Round 1 allotment. When a candidate selects Float, the JoSAA algorithm checks in each subsequent round whether any higher-preference choice in their locked list has become available due to other candidates upgrading out or withdrawing. If a higher-preference seat opens up, the candidate is automatically moved to it.

  • Upgrading only works through choices already in the locked list from June 11. New choices cannot be added after locking. The allotment algorithm considers the full choice list in priority order and assigns the highest available preference, not a specific targeted choice.
  • Float never risks the current seat: even if no upgrade materialises in subsequent rounds, the candidate retains their current allotment as the final seat.
  • Slide is only possible within the same institute: a candidate allotted Electrical Engineering at NIT Trichy can Slide to try for CSE at NIT Trichy, but cannot Slide to NIT Surathkal.
  • Candidates should Float in early rounds and switch to Freeze only once confident that their current allotment is the best achievable option.

OBC-NCL/EWS Certificate Date: Certificates must be issued on or after April 1, 2026. A certificate issued even one day before this date will be rejected during document verification, resulting in immediate seat cancellation. Candidates in these categories must obtain fresh certificates before the Round 1 reporting window.

Choice Modification: No new choices can be added, and existing choices cannot be reordered after the June 11, 2026 locking deadline has passed. Ensure all desired options are in the locked list before the deadline.

JoSAA 2026 Rounds: Conclusion

JoSAA 2026 counselling includes five seat allotment rounds conducted from June 13 to July 16, 2026. Candidates should regularly check the JoSAA 2026 round dates, allotment results and reporting deadlines to avoid losing their seats. Understanding how Freeze, Float and Slide work can also help candidates make better decisions about retaining or upgrading their allotted institute and programme.

Candidates who are not completely satisfied with their initial JoSAA seat allotment can select Float or Slide to remain eligible for upgrades in later rounds. However, all fee payments, document uploads and willingness selections must be completed within the specified deadline. After the final JoSAA 2026 round, vacant NIT, IIIT and GFTI seats may be filled through the CSAB Special Rounds.
