Hydrolysis of Xenon Tetrafluoride ($$\text{XeF}_4$$)

Rarely Tested

Equation (Complete Hydrolysis):
$$6\text{XeF}_4 + 12\text{H}_2\text{O} \longrightarrow 4\text{Xe} + 2\text{XeO}_3 + 24\text{HF} + 3\text{O}_2$$

Concept: $$\text{XeF}_4$$ undergoes a complex self-redox disproportionation reaction during hydrolysis, where Xenon in the +4 oxidation state simultaneously reduces to elemental Xenon ($\text{Xe}$, oxidation state $0$) and oxidizes to Xenon Trioxide ($\text{XeO}_3$, oxidation state $+6$).

Notation:

  • $$\text{XeO}_3$$ = Highly explosive, pyramidal xenon trioxide solid
