Fluorine Unique Behavior

Rarely Tested

Anomalous Traits:

$$\text{Oxidation State} = -1\text{ Only}$$

$$\text{Bond Enthalpy Trend: } \text{Cl}_2 > \text{Br}_2 > \text{F}_2 > \text{I}_2$$

Concept: Being the most electronegative element, it is limited strictly to a negative unity oxidation state; its molecular bond dissociation energy is unexpectedly weak due to severe inter-electronic repulsions between non-bonding lone pairs on its exceptionally tiny atomic cores.

Notation:

  • $$-1$$ = Static oxidation value;
  • $$\text{Cl}_2, \text{Br}_2, \text{F}_2, \text{I}_2$$ = Halogen homonuclear diatomic molecules.
