Catenation

Rarely Tested

Relative Group 14 Strength Order: $$\text{C} \gg \text{Si} > \text{Ge} \approx \text{Sn} > \text{Pb}$$

Concept: The self-linking capacity of an element's atoms to form stable, extended covalent chains or ring networks, heavily governed by the intrinsic strength of the homonuclear single bond.

Notation:

  • $$\text{Carbon}$$ exhibits maximum catenation due to its extraordinarily strong $$\text{C-C}$$ bond energy ($$\approx 348 \text{ kJ mol}^{-1}$$);
  • $$\text{Silicon}$$ forms weaker backbones that prefer oxygen linkages ($$\text{Si-O-Si}$$);
  • $$\text{Lead (Pb)}$$ does not show noticeable catenation capabilities due to large, diffuse orbitals forming very weak bonds.
