Electronegativity Scales (Pauling's Scale)

Rarely Tested

Concept: Determines the relative scale of an atom's power to attract shared bonding electrons, modeled through the divergence of real bond energies from idealized covalent expectations.

Notation:

  • $$X_A, X_B$$ = Electronegativity values of atoms A and B;
  • $$\Delta$$ = Resonance energy factor in $$\text{kcal mol}^{-1}$$ , where
  • $$\Delta = E_{A-B} - \sqrt{E_{A-A} \cdot E_{B-B}}$$
