Interhalogen Compounds ($$XX'_n$$)

Rarely Tested

General Formula:

$$XX'_n \qquad \text{where } n = 1, 3, 5, 7$$

Concept: Binary covalent compounds formed by the combination of two different halogen elements, where the larger halogen ($$X$$) acts as the central atom and is more electropositive than the smaller halogen ($$X'$$).

Notation:

  • $$X$$ = Central halogen with a lower electronegativity;
  • $$X'$$ = Terminal halogen with a higher electronegativity;
  • $$n$$ = Odd integer indicating stoichiometric ratio.
