Phosphorus Oxoacids Structural Basicity

Rarely Tested

Basicity & Key Bonds:

$$\begin{aligned} \text{H}_3\text{PO}_4 \text{ (Orthophosphoric Acid):} &\quad \text{Tribasic} \implies 3 \times \text{P-OH bonds} \\ \text{H}_3\text{PO}_3 \text{ (Orthophosphorous Acid):} &\quad \text{Dibasic} \implies 2 \times \text{P-OH bonds} \quad \text{and} \quad 1 \times \text{Reducing P-H bond} \\ \text{H}_3\text{PO}_2 \text{ (Hypophosphorous Acid):} &\quad \text{Monobasic} \implies 1 \times \text{P-OH bond} \quad \text{and} \quad 2 \times \text{Reducing P-H bonds} \end{aligned}$$

Concept: The basicity of phosphorus oxoacids depends strictly on the number of hydroxyl ($$\text{P-OH}$$) groups able to release protons ($$H^+$$), while hydrogen atoms bonded directly to phosphorus ($$\text{P-H}$$) are non-ionizing and act as strong reducing centers.
