Inert Pair Effect (Heavy p-block elements)

Rarely Tested

Stability Trend: $$\text{Lower Oxidation State Stability Increases Down the Group (e.g., Pb}^{2+} > \text{Pb}^{4+}\text{)}$$

Concept: Relates to the reluctance of the outermost $$ns^2$$ electrons to participate in chemical bonding in heavier post-transition metals due to poor shielding by intervening $$d$$ and $$f$$ electrons, making the lower oxidation state ($$n-2$$) highly stable.

Notation:

  • $$\text{Pb}^{2+}$$ = Inert pair retained oxidation state;
  • $$\text{Pb}^{4+}$$ = Fully oxidized valency state.
