Composition of $$\tan^{-1}x$$ with $$\tan$$

Rarely Tested

Composition of $$\tan^{-1}x$$ with $$\tan$$

## Formula

$$\tan^{-1}(\tan x)=x,\quad x\in\left(-\frac\pi2,\frac\pi2\right)$$

## Usage

- Used only when $$x$$ lies within the principal range of $$\tan^{-1}x$$.

Question 1

$$ \text{If for some } \alpha,\beta;\; \alpha\le\beta,\; \alpha+\beta=8$$ and  $$\sec^2(\tan^{-1}\alpha)+\cosec^2(\cot^{-1}\beta)=36,$$ $$\alpha^2+\beta^2$$  is:_______

Question 2

Given the function $$f(x) = \sin^{-1}\left(\frac{2x}{1+x^2}\right) + 2\tan^{-1}(x)$$ defined for all real numbers $$x$$. Let the maximum value of $$f(x)$$ be $$M$$ and the minimum value of $$f(x)$$ be $$m$$. If $$k$$ is the number of distinct real solutions of the equation $$f(x) = \frac{\pi}{2}$$, find the value of the expression:
$$\frac{M - m}{k\pi}$$
