'Ghatam' is a percussion instrument used in Carnatic music of South India.It is one of the oldest percussion instruments of South India.It is a clay pot with narrow mouth.It is similar to the clay pots used in houses to keep drinking water but these are specially made to be played as an instrument.It is made in a such a way that walls should be of even thickness to produce an even tone.The Pot in placed on the lap of the performer with mouth facing stomach of the performer.The performer uses his thumbs,palms,fingers and heels of hands to produce different sounds.
