NSEP Exam Pattern 2026

NSEP 2026 is an offline, objective examination designed to test conceptual understanding, logical reasoning and the ability to apply physics principles in unfamiliar situations. Its syllabus is broadly equivalent to Physics up to the Class 12 CBSE level.

The question paper contains 60 questions carrying a maximum of 216 marks.

SectionQuestionsMarks per QuestionMarking Scheme
Part A483 marks+3 for correct and โˆ’1 for incorrect
Part B126 marksNo negative marking
Total60โ€”216 marks

Every Part A question has four options, of which only one is correct. Part B questions may have one or more correct options. A candidate receives credit in Part B only when all the correct options and no incorrect options are marked.

The paper is available in English, Hindi, Gujarati, Kannada, Bangla, Tamil and Telugu, subject to the official requirement regarding the minimum number of candidates choosing a language. Candidates must select their preferred language during enrolment.

How to Prepare Before the NSEP 2026 Exam Date?

With the NSEP exam scheduled for November 22, students should build preparation around conceptual understanding rather than formula memorization alone. The following approach can make preparation more effective:

  1. Complete the Class 11 and 12 Physics syllabus: Give priority to mechanics, electricity and magnetism, waves, optics, thermal physics and modern physics.
  2. Strengthen basic concepts: Understand how equations are derived and when they can be applied. NSEP frequently assesses the use of familiar concepts in unfamiliar situations.
  3. Solve previous NSEP papers: Past papers help students understand the difficulty level, common question styles and time required for different topics.
  4. Practise multiple-correct questions: Part B has no negative marking, but marks are awarded only when the complete correct combination is selected.
  5. Take timed mock tests: Attempt full papers within two hours and practise marking answers accurately on an OMR sheet.
  6. Maintain an error notebook: Record conceptual errors, calculation mistakes and incorrect assumptions. Revise this notebook regularly during the final weeks.

During the examination, students should attempt reliable questions first and avoid unnecessary guesses in Part A because it carries negative marking.

What Happens After the NSEP 2026 Exam?

After NSEP, IAPT generally releases the answer key, results and lists of students meeting the applicable selection criteria. Selection for the next stage is governed by the official qualification rules, including merit requirements and applicable quotas; it is not based merely on passing the paper.

The list of students selected for the Indian National Physics Olympiad is scheduled to be published by January 15, 2027. Selected students must then register on the HBCSE Olympiad website to obtain their INPhO admit cards. This registration is mandatory, and failure to complete it can lead to disqualification.

INPhO 2027 will be held on January 31, 2027, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon. Successful candidates can subsequently progress to the Orientation-cum-Selection Camp, pre-departure training and, finally, selection for Indiaโ€™s International Physics Olympiad team.

Candidates should regularly check the IAPT NSE portal and the HBCSE Science Olympiad page for official notices, results and schedule changes.
