How to prepare GK apart from reading newspaper any book or some resource

Following news on an app is more efficient than reading the entire newspaper. Apps like News in Shorts and News Bytes are pretty good to get you a good summary of the daily happenings.

I would also like to  know that current affairs for how many months before the paper would be sufficient to prepare
as i have now only started preparing for it.
as in like around 6 months current affair is ok or like one entire year is required?
