Properties of Transpose

## Formula

$$\left(A^T\right)^T=A$$

$$(A+B)^T=A^T+B^T$$

$$(A-B)^T=A^T-B^T$$

$$(kA)^T=kA^T$$

$$(AB)^T=B^TA^T$$

## Usage

- Used to simplify expressions involving transposes, especially products of matrices.

Question 1

Let $$A$$ be a $$3 \times 3$$ symmetric matrix ($$A^T = A$$) and $$B$$ be a $$3 \times 3$$ skew-symmetric matrix ($$B^T = -B$$) such that:

$$A^4 + B^4 = A$$

Define the following matrices:

  • $$P = (A - B)^{2023} (A + B)^{2023} - (A + B)^{2023} (A - B)^{2023}$$
  • $$Q = (A + B)^T (A^4 + B^4) (A - B) + (A - B)^T (A^4 + B^4) (A + B)$$

Statements:

  • S1: $$P$$ is a skew-symmetric matrix.
  • S2: $$Q$$ is a symmetric matrix.
Question 2

Let $$P$$ be a $$3 \times 3$$ real matrix such that $$P^T = kP + (k^2 - 1)I$$, where $$k \in \mathbb{R}$$ and $$k \neq \pm 1$$. If the matrix $$P$$ is non-singular and $$\text{adj}(P)$$ denotes the adjoint of matrix $$P$$, which of the following must be true?

Question 3

Let $$P$$ be a $$3 \times 3$$ matrix such that $$P^T = 2P + I$$. If $$PX = \lambda X$$ for a non-zero column matrix $$X$$, find the value of $$\lambda$$.
