## Definition / Concept

A matrix is a rectangular arrangement of numbers or quantities in rows and columns.

A matrix with $$m$$ rows and $$n$$ columns is called a matrix of order $m\times n$.

$$A=[a_{ij}]_{m\times n}$$

where $a_{ij}$ represents the element in the $$i$$th row and $$j$$th column.

- Used to represent and manipulate systems of linear equations, transformations and tabular data.
