Williamson Synthesis ($$S_N2$$ Mechanism)

Rarely Tested

$$\text{R--X} + \text{R'--O}^-\text{Na}^+ \xrightarrow{S_N 2} \text{R--O--R'} + \text{NaX}$$

Concept: An nucleophilic substitution reaction ($$S_N 2$$) where an alkoxide ion ($$\text{R'--O}^-$$) acts as a strong nucleophile, attacking an alkyl halide ($$\text{R--X}$$) to displace the halide ion ($$\text{X}^-$$) and form a symmetrical or unsymmetrical ether.
