Grignard Synthesis of Alcohols

Rarely Tested

Grignard reagents react with carbonyls to form alcohols.
With formaldehyde: $$RMgX + H_2CO \rightarrow RCH_2OMgX \xrightarrow{H_3O^+} RCH_2OH$$ (1Β° alcohol)
With aldehyde: $$RMgX + R'CHO \rightarrow RR'CHOMgX \xrightarrow{H_3O^+} RR'CHOH$$ (2Β° alcohol)
With ketone: $$RMgX + R'_2CO \rightarrow RR'_2COMgX \xrightarrow{H_3O^+} RR'_2COH$$ (3Β° alcohol)
