Aldol Condensation

Rarely Tested

Self-Aldol Addition (Base-Catalyzed):
$$2\text{CH}_3\text{CHO} \xrightarrow{\text{Dil. NaOH}} \text{CH}_3\text{--CH(OH)--CH}_2\text{--CHO} \quad (\text{3-Hydroxybutanal / Aldol})$$

Dehydration Step (Aldol Condensation Product):
$$\text{CH}_3\text{--CH(OH)--CH}_2\text{--CHO} \xrightarrow{\Delta, \, -\text{H}_2\text{O}} \text{CH}_3\text{--CH=CH--CHO} \quad (\text{But-2-enal})$$

Concept:  Self-condensation or cross-condensation of aldehydes or ketones containing at least one $$\alpha$$-hydrogen atom in the presence of a dilute alkali $$(\text{NaOH}, \text{ KOH}, \text{ or } \text{Ba(OH)}_2)$$ to form$$\beta$$-hydroxy aldehydes (aldols) or $$\beta$$-hydroxy ketones (ketols). Upon heating, these intermediates readily undergo dehydration to yield $$\alpha,\beta$$-unsaturated carbonyl compounds.

Question 1

Natural rubber on complete ozonolysis ($$\mathrm{O_3}$$/Zn-$$\mathrm{H_2O}$$) gives compound X as the major product. X gives positive iodoform and Tollen's tests. X on heating with aqueous NaOH gives Y as the major product. Y is

Question 2

The List-II contains products obtained from the reaction of compounds in List-I with $$O_3$$/$$Zn$$-$$H_2O$$ followed by cyclization (via more stable enolate) in the presence of aqueous $$NaOH$$. Match each entry in List-I with appropriate entry in List-II and choose the correct option.
