Grignard Addition to Aldehydes and Ketones

Rarely Tested

Addition of Grignard reagent to an aldehyde or ketone in dry ether followed by acid workup yields alcohol:

$$R\!-\!CHO + R'MgBr \xrightarrow{\mathrm{ether}} R\!-\!CH(OMgBr)R'$$
$$R\!-\!CH(OMgBr)R' + \mathrm{H_3O^+} \rightarrow R\!-\!CH(OH)R' + \mathrm{MgBr(OH)}$$

Similarly, for ketones:

$$R_{2}C=O + R'MgBr \xrightarrow{\mathrm{ether}} R_{2}C(OMgBr)R'$$
$$R_{2}C(OMgBr)R' + \mathrm{H_3O^+} \rightarrow R_{2}C(OH)R' + \mathrm{MgBr(OH)}$$
