Base‐induced disproportionation of non‐enolizable aldehydes (no α‐hydrogen) by concentrated alkali:

$$2\mathrm{HCHO} + \mathrm{NaOH} \rightarrow \mathrm{CH_3OH} + \mathrm{HCOONa}$$
$$2\mathrm{ArCHO} + \mathrm{NaOH} \rightarrow \mathrm{ArCH_2OH} + \mathrm{ArCOONa}$$
