An airplane flying 400 km covers first 100km at rate of 100kmph, second 100 km at 200kmph,third 100km at 300kmph and last 100km at 400kmph. In this case why is the average speed not 250kmph?The speeds are in AP so should not the average be (400+100 )/2=250kmph?

No. Actually average speed is dist/time. So you should calculate total distance and total time and then divide dist. by time.
