$$a^2 - b^2 = (a+b)(a-b)$$ Since a-b varies directly with a+b, let a-b = k(a+b)
So, $$a^2 - b^2 = (a+b)k(a+b) = k(a+b)^2$$
So, it varies directly with $$(a+b)^2$$
