XAT Topic-Wise Weightage 2027

Understanding the XAT topic-wise weightage is the single most efficient preparation move you can make. Rather than treating all sections equally, knowing which topics consistently produce the most questions lets you allocate your study hours where they matter most.

XAT 2027 follows a two-part exam pattern: Part 1 covers 75 questions across Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation, Decision Making, and Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning, to be completed in 170 minutes; Part 2 features 20 General Knowledge questions to be answered in 10 minutes. Before diving into the section-level breakdown, bookmark the full XAT 2027 exam overview to stay updated with any official changes to the pattern.

XAT Quants Topic-Wise Weightage

The QADI section comprises 28 questions, with each question carrying one mark. Topics include Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Probability, Mensuration, and various Data Interpretation formats such as pie charts, caselets, bar graphs, and time-zone related DI sets.

Based on analysis of XAT papers from 2024, 2025, and 2026, here is the expected topic-wise distribution for XAT 2027:

TopicExpected No. of QuestionsApprox. Weightage
Arithmetic8–1030–35%
Data Interpretation6–825–30%
Algebra5–618–22%
Geometry and Mensuration3–412–15%
Number System2–37–10%
Modern Mathematics1–24–6%
Total28100%

Arithmetic remains the highest-scoring topic, with 8 to 10 questions expected, carrying 30 to 35% weightage, covering percentages, profit and loss, and time and distance. Modern Math had a weightage of only 4% in XAT 2025, with just one question appearing in that cycle.

Over the past five years, Arithmetic and Algebra have dominated the XAT Quant section consistently. In XAT 2025, Arithmetic accounted for 9 questions at 32% weightage, while Data Interpretation contributed 13 questions at 46% weightage.

For a deeper grip on solving these topics under time pressure, refer to the XAT Formulas PDF which covers all high-frequency formula sets for Arithmetic, Geometry, and Algebra.

XAT Decision Making Weightage

Decision Making is the section that separates XAT from every other MBA entrance exam. It cannot be prepared through formulas alone and requires deliberate practice with real-life caselets.

TopicExpected No. of QuestionsApprox. Weightage
Business Scenarios and Managerial Dilemmas9–1243–57%
Ethical Dilemmas3–614–28%
Social and HR Issues3–614–28%
Data-Based Decision Making0–30–14%
Total21100%

In XAT 2026, the Decision Making section had 21 questions across 7 sets of 3 questions each. Sets covered topics including B-school admissions, recruitment scenarios in fintech firms, clash of interest between Gen Z and senior management, HR issues in an education service provider, and commerce graduates' professional problems.

All questions in this section are situation-based, assessing leadership and management skills. Each question has five options with one correct answer, and there is a negative marking of 0.25 marks for each incorrect response and 0.10 marks for questions left unattempted beyond the eighth.

For a complete topic and strategy breakdown for both VALR and DM, visit the dedicated XAT VALR and DM Topic-Wise Weightage 2027 page. Here we have discussed XAT Topic-Wise Weightage 2027 including QA, VALR, Decision Making, GK weightage, and high-scoring topics

XAT Verbal and Logical Ability Weightage

In XAT 2026, the Verbal and Logical Ability section contained 15 Reading Comprehension questions, 2 poem-based questions, and 9 Verbal Ability and Reasoning questions. The five passages were approximately 300 to 550 words each.

Here is the expected topic-wise distribution for XAT 2027:

TopicExpected No. of QuestionsApprox. Weightage
Reading Comprehension (Prose Passages)12–1546–57%
Poem-Based Comprehension1–24–8%
Critical and Analytical Reasoning4–515–19%
Grammar and Sentence Correction2–38–12%
Para-Jumbles and Para Completion2–38–12%
Vocabulary and Analogy1–24–8%
Total26100%

Reading Comprehension carries the highest weightage in XAT, followed by Critical Reasoning. Grammar-based questions appear in smaller numbers compared to RC and reasoning-based verbal questions. XAT Verbal is generally considered tougher than CAT due to longer RC passages, denser language, and complex reasoning-based questions that test deep comprehension and analytical thinking.

In XAT 2026, the VALR section was moderate to difficult, with a strong focus on comprehension and critical reasoning. Candidates who selected questions wisely could attempt around 16 to 18 questions, making accuracy and smart question choice the key factors.

XAT General Knowledge Weightage

The General Knowledge section in XAT has approximately 20 questions, split into around 8 static GK questions and 12 current affairs questions. This 10-minute section allows for a balanced evaluation of candidates' awareness of both ongoing events and foundational knowledge.

Sub-CategoryNo. of QuestionsKey Areas
Current Affairs12Economy, politics, international events, business
Static GK8Constitution, geography, awards, science, sports
Total20

Important: GK marks do not affect the XAT percentile. However, GK scores are considered during the PI shortlisting and final admission process for XLRI and other top institutes. Do not skip it if your target is XLRI.

Which Topics Have Highest Weightage in XAT Exam?

Looking across all three percentile-counted sections, here is a consolidated ranking of the highest-weightage topics:

RankTopicSectionApprox. Questions
1ArithmeticQA and DI8–10
2Reading ComprehensionVALR13–17
3Data InterpretationQA and DI6–8
4Business and Ethical CaseletsDecision Making9–12
5AlgebraQA and DI5–6
6Critical and Analytical ReasoningVALR4–5

Arithmetic and Data Interpretation together constitute a major chunk of questions in the Quant section, making them high-priority areas for preparation. Reading Comprehension dominates the VALR section with the highest number of questions. The entire Decision Making section is focused on complex caselets of 21 to 22 questions in total.

XAT Important Topics Based on the Weightage

XAT Important Topics for Decision Making

The Decision Making section rewards structured thinking, not speed. The key is to approach each caselet with a neutral, managerial mindset rather than personal opinion.

Priority topics to master before the exam:

  • Business and organisational dilemmas (multi-perspective conflicts between stakeholders)
  • Ethical reasoning (situations where short-term gain conflicts with long-term integrity)
  • HR and people management scenarios
  • Social dilemmas involving policy trade-offs or community impact
  • Data-supported decision caselets that require reading between the lines

The Decision Making section is unique to XAT in comparison to all other MBA entrance exams. It tests a candidate's presence of mind and ability to read situations so that problem-solving and case-solving skills can be assessed. There are typically 6 to 8 decision-making sets with 2 to 3 questions each.

XAT Important Topics for Verbal Ability

RC is the foundation of the VALR section, and no other topic comes close in terms of question volume.

Priority topics:

  • RC passages from behavioural science, philosophy, economics, and science and technology (recurring themes from past papers)
  • Poem-based comprehension (abstract interpretation is a consistent feature)
  • Critical reasoning questions with close, trap-heavy options
  • Para-jumbles (focus on logical connector words and argument flow)
  • Grammar questions requiring identification of correct or incorrect sentences among given options

Many questions in XAT VALR are inferential and application-based. To score in the 95th percentile in this section, candidates should aim to attempt 13 to 14 questions in about 55 to 60 minutes with 75 to 80% accuracy.

XAT Important Topics for Quantitative Aptitude

QA is the section where most candidates lose marks through either over-attempting or poor question selection. Accuracy matters more than volume here.

Priority topics based on past paper analysis:

  • Arithmetic: Percentages, Profit and Loss, Time and Distance, Time and Work, Averages, Mixtures
  • Data Interpretation: Table-based DI, Time-zone DI, Bar and Pie chart combinations
  • Algebra: Linear and quadratic equations, inequalities, progressions, logarithms
  • Geometry and Mensuration: Circles, triangles, co-ordinate geometry
  • Number System: Divisibility, HCF and LCM, factorisation
  • Modern Mathematics: Permutations, Combinations, Probability (low volume but often doable)

Arithmetic forms the backbone of the Quant section with the highest weightage of around 30 to 35% of questions. Algebra is also significant, forming 20 to 25% of total QA questions. Geometry and Mensuration contribute about 12 to 18% of the QA section, and while the questions are fewer, they tend to be less calculation-heavy and more scoring for well-prepared candidates.

Refer to the detailed XAT Syllabus 2027 to cross-check topic coverage across all four sections before finalising your preparation plan. Once you begin attempting mocks, the XAT Score vs Percentile 2027 guide will help you set realistic section-wise score targets.

XAT Topic-Wise Weightage 2027: Conclusion

The XAT topic-wise weightage picture for 2027 is consistent with a clear pattern that has held across the last three exam cycles. Arithmetic and Data Interpretation anchor the QA section. Reading Comprehension dominates VALR. Decision Making is entirely caselet-based and must be treated as a distinct skill, not an extension of logical reasoning from other exams.

The candidates who score above 95 percentile in XAT are not necessarily those who attempted the most questions. They are the ones who identified the right questions in each section and executed with accuracy under time pressure. That instinct is built through deliberate topic-wise preparation guided by real weightage data, not generic syllabus lists.

Use this breakdown to build a weighted study plan, allocate mock time by section priority, and go into January 2027 knowing exactly which topics will determine your percentile.
