Factors Affecting XAT 2027 Percentile
Your percentile is not a static measure of where you stand in comparison to each and every student who appears in XAT 2027. There are several elements that will determine the existence of the percentile lines:
Overall difficulty of the paper: if the QADI or DM portion is tough this will reduce raw scores across the cohort which may result in a lower raw-score cut off for 99 percentile even though you perform in the same way.
Number of test-takers: While XAT is taken by a lot more than a lakh candidates each year, a larger/smaller number at the margin would affect how the percentiles get distributed.
Sectional normalization: XLRI first calculates the percentiles for the section as well as for the complete paper, thus an abnormally easy or tough section that year shifts what a "good attempt" looks like within that section specifically.
Accuracy versus attempts: the two test-takers may both attempt 60 questions but if one is more accurate - meaning they answered less wrong and reduced the impact of negative marking - they will score significantly higher.
GK section: GK questions aren't even related to your percentile, so spending time here isn't changing this number but it does count for XLRI's individual shortlisting.
The Unattempted Question Penalty: XAT deducts 0.10 marks for every unanswered question over and above 8. For leaving 30 questions unattempted, (30-8)*0.10 = 2.20 marks. It appears to be insignificant as a difference of 2.2 marks can push a candidate from the 99th percentile to the 96th percentile.
Sectional Cutoffs at target colleges: Some B-schools like XLRI have minimum sectionals too (minimum section-wise percentile) so a 99 overall percentile aspirant with a bad DM sectional can still be rejected. It's not just the overall figure.

Tips & Tricks to Maximize Your XAT 2027 Score
Build Accuracy Before Speed:
- More questions attempted is only beneficial if you maintain a good accuracy of more than somewhere around 80% - lower than that, going for more attempts usually costs you more than what you gain on account of negative marking.
- Focus your review of mocks on what kind of questions you are most likely to get wrong.
Prioritize by Section Strengths, Not Question Order:
- Begin in your strongest section to accumulate early marks and gain confidence prior to attacking DM's full-length scenarios or QADI's demands calculations.
- Starting with QADI, search for sets that involve both Arithmetic and Data Interpretation - questions in these sets are generally faster to answer correctly than pure Geometry or Modern Math.
Don't Think of Decision Making as Guess Work, treat it as a skill:
- Take the time to read each scenario twice before answering any of the three related questions - DM questions tend to be set up so that a single gross misinterpretation at the outset can cause two subsequent questions to go wrong.
- Choose options that serve stakeholder fairness and the organization's long-term interest rather than options that optimize short-term financial gains.
Use Previous Year Papers and Mocks Deliberately:
- Complete minimum of 8-10 XAT mock tests with correct time preservation before December and note down section-wise accuracy and attempts after every XAT mock.
