Can You Get XLRI with 80 Percentile in XAT?
The honest answer is no - not for the flagship two-year programmes. For the two-year flagship programs of XLRI Jamshedpur (BM, HRM) and XLRI Delhi-NCR (BM), you are unlikely to be short-listed in the General Category with an 80 percentile.
Flagship Programme Cutoffs: XLRI has overall cutoffs of 92-96+ percentile for Business Management (BM) and 90-93+ for Human Resource Management (HRM), along with sectional cutoffs for Decision-Making (DM), VARL and QA.
Exceptions & Executive Tracks:
XLRI PGDM (General Management): For the 15-month executive program requiring 5+ years of experience, the candidates may be considered up to 80-85% if they have done exceedingly well on the profile. This is mostly for XLRI PGDM (General Management)- the 15-month executive program which requires 5+ years of corporate experience.
Candidates belonging to reserved or specialized diversity categories may sometimes face the requirement of slightly lesser percentile scores in few specialised programs although on the whole 2-year BM / HRM programs have cutoffs above 90%.
XAT Colleges Accepting 75 to 80 Percentile

B-School | Expected Cutoff | Notable Strength |
Welingkar (WeSchool), Mumbai | 75 - 80 | Design thinking, media and e-commerce roles |
IFMR GSB, Krea University | 75 - 80 | Finance and analytics, strong faculty research base |
Great Lakes Gurgaon | 75 - 80 | One-year PGPM for experienced candidates |
Jaipuria Institute of Management (all campuses) | 72 - 78 | Wide campus network, moderate fees |
IMT Nagpur / IMT Hyderabad | 72 - 78 | IMT brand at a lower entry barrier |
SDMIMD Mysore | 70 - 78 | Low fee, consistently high placement percentage |
BIM Trichy | 72 - 78 | Strong South India recruiter base |
FIIB New Delhi | 68 - 75 | Industry-integrated curriculum |
NDIM New Delhi | 68 - 72 | Large recruiter pool, NCR location |
SOIL Institute of Management, Gurgaon | 60 - 70 | Leadership-focused one-year programme |
Is 80 Percentile a Good Score in XAT?
Compared to the XAT exam itself, yes. XAT is considered to be more difficult than most Indian management entrance exams: it contains a Decision Making component unlike any other exam, a negative marking scheme beyond a certain number of unattempted questions, a General Knowledge section that does not contribute to the percentile calculation but does contribute to the final call, and a self-selecting candidate base, most of whom have already appeared for CAT.
What does 80 Percentile get you?
- Calls from a wide range of AICTE-approved PGDM institutes with at least moderate placements.
- Access to programmes with average packages in the 9 to 15 lakh range.
- A credible result in a single attempt, especially if you come with work experience.
What does not get you?
- XLRI, XIM University, MICA, IMT Ghaziabad, IMI Delhi or SPJIMR.
- Automatic scholarships, which at most of these schools are aligned to percentile bands beginning from 90.
Factors That Can Offset a Decent Percentile
The ultimate offer decision at the 80-percentile level is seldom decided by the score. Institutes across this band assign a mere 25-40% weight to the XAT percentile score in the final merit list. The remainder of the weight is assigned to:
- Work experience - 18 to 36 months is generally the ideal range.
- Academic consistency across Class 10, Class 12 and graduation.
- Academic and gender diversity, which several institutes explicitly give weight to.
- GD, WAT and PI performance, which is the single largest weight in the final scoring.
- General Knowledge section score, as in the case of XLRI and a few others.
XAT Colleges Accepting 80 Percentile: Conclusion
An 80 percentile in XAT can provide candidates with multiple MBA and PGDM admission opportunities. While this score may not meet the cutoff requirements of some of the highest-cutoff institutes, aspirants can explore several XAT colleges accepting 80 percentile and compare them based on programme, fees, placements, location and selection process.
Candidates should also consider XAT colleges accepting 75 to 80 percentile while building their application list. Since expected and actual cutoffs can change every year, applicants should check the latest admission criteria of each B-school and focus on preparing well for GD, WAT and PI rounds.
