XAT Exam 2027
The Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) is a national-level management entrance exam conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur. But what makes XAT different from other MBA entrance exams? Its Decision Making section tests how you respond to practical situations, rather than relying only on standard aptitude questions. XAT 2027 is scheduled for January 3, 2027, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The paper will contain 95 questions across four sections.
The exam score is accepted by 250+ B-schools, giving you access to management programmes across India. Therefore, understanding the exam structure early can make your preparation more focused and less confusing.
XAT 2027 Exam Overview
XLRI Jamshedpur conducts XAT on behalf of the Xavier Association of Management Institutes (XAMI). The exam has been conducted for more than 75 years and is used for admission to management programmes across participating institutes.
XAT is conducted once a year, usually in January. In recent years, the examination has been held on a Sunday, generally during the first or early Sunday of January. However, the exact date can change each year, so you should rely on the official notification instead of assuming a fixed calendar rule.
For 2027, the exam falls on Sunday, January 3, which is the first Sunday of January. It will be conducted in a single slot, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. XAT 2027 registration is open you can apply before December 6, 2026.

The first three sections receive 170 minutes together, while GK has a separate 10-minute window. The current official pattern therefore gives you a combined 170-minute block for VALR, DM, and QA & DI.
GK also works differently from the other sections. The official pattern includes 8 static GK questions and 12 current-affairs questions. GK has no negative marking and does not contribute to the overall percentile or cutoff score, although XLRI can consider it during its selection process.
Is There Negative Marking in XAT 2027?
Yes. XAT 2027 has negative marking for incorrect answers.
- You receive 1 mark for every correct answer, while 0.25 marks are deducted for every incorrect answer. There is also a separate penalty for leaving too many questions unanswered.
- The unanswered-question rule is worth remembering because it can affect your score even when you do not mark an incorrect option.
- You can leave up to eight questions unanswered without penalty. From the ninth unanswered question onward, 0.10 marks are deducted per question.
This makes random guessing less useful, particularly when you already have eight unanswered questions. At the same time, the absence of sectional limits means you can revisit questions before the three-hour window ends.
XAT 2027 Exam Date
The official XAT website has confirmed January 3, 2027 as the XAT 2027 exam date. The test will begin at 2:00 PM and end at 5:00 PM.
The examination is scheduled in a single slot across 100+ test cities. Since there is only one slot, candidates do not need to compare morning and afternoon shifts while preparing their test-day routine.

XAT 2027 Syllabus
- XLRI does not publish a chapter-wise XAT 2027 syllabus PDF with fixed question counts. Instead, it describes the broad abilities tested in each section. XAT previous papers are therefore useful for understanding the XAT syllabus.
- The syllabus is especially important for VALR and QA & DI because their questions do not always follow a neat textbook pattern.
- For example, XAT VALR can move from a conventional RC to a poem, image, grammar question, or critical reasoning question. Recent papers have included unusual reading material rather than relying only on standard business passages.
- Similarly, QA & DI is not simply a collection of arithmetic questions. Recent papers have mixed conventional QA with data sufficiency, geometry-based DI, number-based sets, graphs, and reasoning-heavy data interpretation.
XAT 2027 Section-Wise Syllabus
XAT 2027 VALR Syllabus
The VALR section has 26 questions. Reading Comprehension usually takes the largest share, but XAT also mixes grammar, vocabulary and reasoning questions. Recent papers have included passages, poems, critical reasoning, para jumbles and image-based questions.
VALR Topic | Indicative Questions | Approx. Weightage |
Reading Comprehension | 12–15 | 46–58% |
Critical Reasoning | 3–5 | 12–19% |
Para Jumbles | 2–3 | 8–12% |
Grammar & Sentence Correction | 2–3 | 8–12% |
Vocabulary | 1–3 | 4–12% |
Fill in the Blanks / Cloze | 1–2 | 4–8% |
Poem / Image / Unusual RC Formats | 1–2 | 4–8% |
Recent-paper reference: XAT 2025 had 17 RC-related questions, including five passages and a poem, while the remaining questions covered grammar, fill-in-the-blanks, jumbled paragraphs, critical reasoning and an image-based question. Exact distributions can shift from year to year.
XAT 2027 Decision Making Syllabus
Decision Making is one of the sections that separates XAT from other MBA entrance exams. It contains 21 questions, and recent papers have commonly used seven sets of three questions each. The questions are based on personal or professional situations and require you to assess competing options rather than apply a fixed formula.
DM Area | What the Questions Test |
Business Caselets | Managerial decisions, business conflicts, resource allocation |
Ethical Situations | Fairness, transparency, responsibility and ethical choices |
Workplace Scenarios | Employee issues, leadership, communication and policy decisions |
Personal Situations | Practical choices involving competing interests |
Prioritisation | Deciding what should be addressed first |
Stakeholder Management | Balancing the interests of customers, employees, management and other groups |
Problem Solving | Identifying the most practical and sustainable response |
Data-Based Caselets | Using information within a case to compare possible decisions |
A useful way to approach DM is to read the entire case before looking at the options. XAT often gives several answers that appear reasonable, but one option fits the facts and priorities more completely.
QA & DI contains 28 questions. The official syllabus covers arithmetic, algebra, geometry, mensuration and modern mathematics, along with DI requiring interpretation and analysis of data. Recent papers have also tested number systems and data sufficiency.
Recent XAT papers show that the QA-DI mix can change considerably. For example, XAT 2025 had 16 QA and 12 DI questions, with four DI sets of three questions each. Therefore, the table below should be treated as indicative rather than a fixed 2027 blueprint.
QA & DI Area | Indicative Questions | Important Subtopics |
Arithmetic | 3–5 | Percentages, profit & loss, ratio, proportion, averages, mixtures, SI/CI, time & work, TSD |
Geometry & Mensuration | 4–6 | Triangles, circles, quadrilaterals, tangents, coordinate geometry, areas, volumes, surface area, height & distance |
Algebra | 3–4 | Linear equations, quadratics, polynomials, inequalities, functions, logarithms, progressions |
Number System | 2–3 | Divisibility, HCF-LCM, remainders, factors, units digit, indices, cyclicity |
Modern Mathematics | 2–4 | Probability, P&C;, set theory, Venn diagrams, functions, sequences and series |
Data Interpretation | 9–12 | Tables, graphs, charts, scatter plots, averages, arithmetic caselets, matrices |
Data Sufficiency | 0–2 | Sufficiency of statements, quantitative conditions |
QA Subtopics in More Detail
QA Topic | Subtopics to Prepare |
Arithmetic | Percentages, ratio-proportion, averages, profit-loss-discount, simple and compound interest, mixtures and alligation, time and work, pipes and cisterns, time-speed-distance, boats and streams, partnership, ages |
Algebra | Linear equations, quadratic equations, polynomials, inequalities, functions, logarithms, sequences, series, progressions, coordinate-based algebra, maximum-minimum |
Geometry | Lines and angles, triangles, similarity, congruence, quadrilaterals, polygons, circles, tangents, coordinate geometry, height and distance |
Mensuration | 2D areas, perimeter, 3D volumes, surface area, cubes, cuboids, cylinders, cones, spheres and frustums |

Modern Maths | Permutation and combination, probability, set theory, Venn diagrams, functions, sequences and series |
XAT DI Syllabus
DI in XAT is not a separate section. It is combined with QA, so you need to switch between calculation-heavy questions and data-based sets within the same section. Recent XAT 2025 analysis reported four DI sets with three questions each, covering scatter/line graphs, arithmetic, averages and number matrices.
DI Set Type | Common Subtopics |
Tables | Comparison, ratios, percentages, missing values |
Bar/Line Graphs | Trends, growth, comparison, combined data |
Scatter Plots | Relationship between variables, estimation and observation |
Pie Charts | Percentage distribution, ratios and comparisons |
Arithmetic DI | Profit-loss, averages, percentages, ratios and time-based data |
Average-Based Sets | Mean, weighted average and comparison |
Number Matrices | Number patterns, row-column relationships and calculations |
Caselet DI | Paragraph-based numerical information requiring extraction and analysis |
XAT 2027 GK Syllabus
GK has 20 questions, with 8 questions from static GK and 12 from current affairs according to the official XAT 2027 information. GK has a separate 10-minute section and does not carry negative marking.
GK Area | Topics to Cover |
Current Affairs | National and international events, major appointments, government initiatives, important developments |
Business & Economy | Companies, business events, banking, markets, economic policies and major financial developments |
History | Indian history, major events, personalities and movements |
Geography | India and world geography, locations, resources and important places |
Science & Technology | Space, inventions, technology, major scientific developments |
Sports | Tournaments, awards, records, players and major sporting events |
Awards & Honours | National and international awards, major winners |
Books & Authors | Important books, authors and literary awards |
Polity & Constitution | Constitutional facts, institutions and important national developments |
Arts & Culture | Art forms, heritage, culture and significant personalities |
Important: These topic-wise numbers are recent-paper indicators, not an official fixed XAT 2027 weightage. XLRI publishes the broad syllabus, while the exact mix can change between papers.
XAT 2027 Marking Scheme
The XAT marking scheme is straightforward for correct and incorrect responses, but the unanswered-question rule needs attention.
You get +1 for a correct answer and -0.25 for an incorrect answer. After eight unanswered questions, every additional unanswered question attracts a -0.10 penalty. GK has no negative marking.
Response | Marks |
Correct | +1 |
Incorrect in VALR, DM or QA & DI | -0.25 |
First 8 unanswered | No penalty |
Each unanswered after 8 | -0.10 |
Incorrect GK | No negative marking |
The 20 GK questions do not contribute to the overall percentile or cutoff score, although XLRI can consider GK during its selection process.
Example of the XAT Skipping Penalty
Suppose you leave 11 questions unanswered.
The first eight carry no penalty. The remaining three attract a penalty of:
3 × 0.10 = 0.30 marks
So, your score loses 0.30 marks from unanswered questions alone.
This rule makes XAT different from a paper where skipping has no consequence. You therefore need to balance accuracy with the number of questions you leave untouched.
XAT 2027 Admit Card
The XAT 2027 admit card is scheduled to be available from December 20, 2026, although XLRI currently marks this date as tentative. The official FAQ confirms the same tentative release date.

XAT 2027 Answer Key
The XAT 2027 answer key will help you verify your responses before the final result. It is particularly useful because you can compare your candidate response sheet with XLRI's provisional answers and estimate your raw score.
In XAT 2026, the candidate response sheet was released first, followed by the provisional answer key on January 9, 2026. Candidates were allowed to raise objections against the provisional key.
What Does the XAT Answer Key Contain?
Detail | What You Can Check |
Question ID | Identifies each question |
Your Response | Option marked by you during the exam |
Official Answer | Option considered correct by XLRI |
Question Paper | Questions corresponding to your paper |
Section/Part | VALR, DM, QA & DI or GK |
Candidate Details | Details linked to your XAT login |
Objection Facility | Allows you to challenge an answer where applicable |
The response sheet tells you what you marked, while the answer key tells you what XLRI considers correct. Comparing the two gives you the basis for calculating your estimated score.
How to Use the XAT 2027 Answer Key
- Visit the official XAT website and log in using your XAT credentials.
- Open the candidate response or answer-key section.
- Download your response sheet and provisional answer key.
- Match your response with the official answer for every question.
- Count your correct and incorrect responses separately.
- Keep track of unanswered questions because XAT has an unusual unanswered-question penalty.
- Calculate your raw score using the official marking scheme.
- If you find an incorrect official answer, check the objection instructions before submitting a challenge.
- Recalculate your score after the final answer key, if XLRI changes any answer.
How to Calculate XAT 2027 Score?
XAT has +1 mark for every correct answer and -0.25 for every incorrect answer. The first eight unanswered questions do not attract a penalty. After eight unanswered questions, each additional unanswered question carries a -0.10 mark penalty. GK has no negative marking and does not contribute to the overall percentile or cutoff score.
XAT Score Calculation Formula
XAT Raw Score = Correct Answers − (0.25 × Wrong Answers) − (0.10 × Unanswered Questions beyond 8)
For example, suppose you have:
- Correct answers = 50
- Incorrect answers = 15
- Unanswered = 10
The first eight unanswered questions have no penalty.
Raw Score = 50 − (15 × 0.25) − (2 × 0.10)
Raw Score = 50 − 3.75 − 0.20 = 46.05
This gives you an estimated XAT raw score of 46.05.
However, this score is not the same as your percentile. Percentile depends on your performance relative to other test-takers.
How Is XAT Percentile Calculated?
The basic percentile concept is based on your rank among candidates who appeared for the examination:
Percentile = [(Number of candidates − Rank) / Number of candidates] × 100
For example, if 100,000 candidates appear and your rank is 2,000:
Percentile = [(100,000 − 2,000) / 100,000] × 100 = 98 percentile
The final percentile displayed on your scorecard is determined by XLRI's scoring and ranking process. Therefore, an answer-key calculation can estimate your raw score, but it cannot give your exact final percentile before the official result.
XAT 2027 Result
The official XAT 2027 FAQ currently says that the XAT 2027 result will be announced approximately three weeks after the examination. Since the exam is scheduled for January 3, 2027, the result can therefore be expected around the third or fourth week of January 2027, unless XLRI announces a different schedule.
For reference, the XAT 2026 result was released on January 16, 2026, after the January 4 examination.
XAT Year | Exam Date | Result Date |
XAT 2026 | January 4, 2026 | January 16, 2026 |
XAT 2027 | January 3, 2027 | Expected around late January 2027 |
Therefore, January 2027 is the relevant window for XAT 2027 results. The exact date should be treated as tentative until XLRI publishes it.
Details Mentioned on the XAT Result
Your XAT scorecard generally contains:
- Candidate name
- XAT ID
- Examination details
- Section-wise scores
- Overall score
- Section-wise percentiles
- Overall percentile
- Other scorecard details issued by XLRI
The 2026 scorecard included the candidate's XAT score and percentile along with examination and identification details.
How to Check XAT 2027 Result

- Click the XAT 2027 result or scorecard link.
- Enter your XAT ID and password.
- Submit the login details.
- View your scorecard.
- Download and save a copy for the admission process.
Your XAT result is not the same as an admission offer. Individual institutes use their own shortlisting and selection criteria after receiving the XAT score.
XAT 2027 Cut Off
XAT cutoff refers to the minimum percentile or score used by an institute for shortlisting candidates. There is no single XAT cutoff applicable to all colleges.
XLRI publishes its own programme-wise and profile-wise cutoff, while XIM University, IMT Ghaziabad, K J Somaiya, GIM, TAPMI, FORE and other institutes follow their own admission policies.
For XAT 2027, actual college cutoffs will only become available after the examination and result. The figures below therefore separate previous-year/expected data from official 2027 cutoffs.
XAT Score vs Percentile
Raw marks can change considerably from one XAT paper to another because the difficulty level and candidate performance change. Recent estimates illustrate this variation. For XAT 2026, one post-exam analysis placed around 37–38 marks near the 99 percentile range, while another estimate placed the 99 percentile around 36.5 marks.
For a practical reference, you can use the following recent trend range:
XAT Raw Score | Indicative Percentile Range |
40–42+ | 99+ |
36–39 | 98–99 |
32–35 | 95–98 |
29–31 | 92–95 |
26–28 | 90–92 |
23–25 | 85–90 |
20–22 | 80–85 |
17–19 | 70–80 |
14–16 | 60–70 |
These are indicative score-to-percentile ranges, not the official XAT 2027 conversion. The same raw score can produce a different percentile in another year. For instance, 2025 estimates placed 30–32 marks around the 90 percentile range, while 2026 post-exam estimates differed because of the year's paper and candidate performance.

How to Prepare for XAT 2027?
Currently, you have 3 months for XAT 2027. So the preparation plan works better when you track hours, questions, accuracy and mock performance together. Aim for around 3-4 hours on weekdays and 5–6 hours on weekends. Instead of following the same routine for every section, give each subject a different practice strategy based on its question pattern.
XAT 2027 VALR Preparation
Spend 50-60 minutes daily on Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning. Start with Reading Comprehension because it usually forms a substantial part of the section.
Month 1: Read one editorial or long-form article daily and solve 1–2 RC passages. Add 10–15 questions covering vocabulary, grammar, para jumbles and Critical Reasoning. Focus on understanding the author's argument rather than reading quickly.
Month 2: Increase RC practice to 2–3 passages per day. Start solving XAT previous year questions topic-wise, particularly RC and Critical Reasoning questions. Maintain an error log with the reason for every incorrect answer.
Month 3: Take one VALR sectional mock every week, moving to two when your accuracy becomes stable. After every test, identify whether the problem came from comprehension, option elimination or time management.
XAT 2027 Decision Making Preparation
Give Decision Making around 45-50 minutes on alternate days initially. Unlike QA, improvement in DM comes largely from understanding how different options respond to a given situation.
Month 1: Solve 2-3 DM caselets per practice session without strict time pressure. After each set, write down why the selected option works and why the others fail.
Month 2: Move to timed practice with XAT questions from previous papers. Target around 3-4 sets per session and start reducing the time spent on each caselet.
Month 3: Attempt one DM sectional mock every week, followed by detailed analysis. If accuracy remains inconsistent, repeat older caselets and compare your reasoning with the official explanations.
Pay attention to ethics, stakeholder interests, practicality and the consequences of each decision. Avoid applying one fixed rule to every case.
XAT 2027 QA & DI Preparation
Set aside 75-90 minutes daily for QA & DI. Divide this time between concept revision and timed question-solving.
Month 1: Complete the core topics of Arithmetic, Algebra and Number Systems. Solve around 20-25 questions per practice session, starting with untimed work and gradually introducing a time limit.
Month 2: Add Geometry, Mensuration, Modern Maths and Data Interpretation. Practise 25-35 mixed questions and include DI sets involving tables, graphs, averages and ratios.
Use XAT online coaching or structured concept classes for topics where you repeatedly make mistakes. However, follow every concept session with actual questions so that learning does not remain theoretical.
Month 3: Take a QA-DI sectional mock every week, increasing this to two when required. Record three separate error types: concept mistakes, calculation mistakes and poor question selection.
XAT 2027 GK Preparation
GK needs less daily time but more regular revision. Spend 15–20 minutes each day reading current affairs and reserve 45–60 minutes on one weekend day for revision.
Month 1: Cover important national and international events, business, economy, awards, sports, science and government-related developments. Create short notes instead of copying entire news articles.
Month 2: Revise your monthly current-affairs notes and attempt one XAT GK quiz every week. Add static GK topics such as history, geography, polity and important organisations.
Month 3: Increase revision frequency and take short timed tests. Focus on facts that you repeatedly forget rather than continuously adding new material.
XAT 2027 Weekly Mock Test Plan
Do not start with full-length mocks every few days. Your XAT mock tests should increase as your concepts become stronger.
Week | Full-Length Mocks | Sectional Focus |
1–2 | 1 diagnostic mock | Identify weak sections |
3–4 | 1 mock | VALR + QA-DI |
5–6 | 1–2 mocks | DM + weaker section |
7–8 | 2 mocks | All four sections |
9–10 | 2 mocks | Timed sectional practice |
11 | 2 mocks | Weak-area correction |
12 | 2–3 mocks | Final revision and exam simulation |
Keep Sunday for a full mock whenever possible. Analyse it the same day or on Monday for at least 1.5–2 hours. A mock should tell you more than your score. Check which questions consumed excessive time, which guesses failed and which topics repeatedly reduced your accuracy.
