Is XAT Tougher Than CAT?
CAT 2026 is on November 29, 2026, and XAT 2027 is on January 3, 2027, just 35 days after CAT. In length and structure, XAT is tougher than CAT. However, the competition changes the scenario completely. XAT has 95 questions in 180 minutes, while CAT has only 68 questions in 120 minutes. XAT also has two sections that CAT does not: Decision Making and General Knowledge. It cuts marks when you leave more than 8 questions blank, which CAT does not do.
XAT vs CAT Difficulty Level: Section-Wise Comparison
The XAT Exam Analysis rated the XAT 2026 paper as moderate, which was easier than the moderate-to-tough XAT 2025 paper. CAT became tougher instead. The CAT 2024 paper was moderate, but the CAT 2025 paper was moderate to difficult in all three sessions.
Section-Wise Difficulty, Latest Papers
Skill | CAT 2025 paper | XAT 2026 paper |
Verbal | VARC, 24 questions: mostly easy to moderate | VALR, 26 questions: moderate, with lengthy reading passages |
Data and logic | DILR, 22 questions: difficult | Logical reasoning sits inside VALR and data interpretation inside QA & DI |
Quant | QA, 22 questions: moderate to difficult | QA & DI, 28 questions: moderate to difficult |
Decision Making | XAT-only section | 21 questions: easy to moderate |
General Knowledge | XAT-only section | 20 questions: easy to moderate |
VARC vs VALR
CAT's VARC set four reading passages in each session of the 2025 paper. XAT's VALR places poems and cartoons beside its reading passages, and the 2026 passages ran long and took time to read.
DILR vs Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation
CAT's DILR is built from multi-layered, time-intensive sets and was rated difficult in two of the three 2025 sessions. XAT spreads the same skills over two sections, with logical reasoning in VALR and data interpretation in QA & DI.
QA vs QA & DI
XAT's QA & DI combines quant with data interpretation, and the 2026 section was described as lengthy and time-consuming. CAT keeps data interpretation in DILR, and its QA section covers quant topics alone.
Why Is XAT Considered More Difficult Than CAT?
Four differences explain why XAT is considered more difficult than CAT. Two are sections CAT doesn't have at all, and the other two come down to how XAT marks and times Part 1.
- XAT Decision Making, in Part 1, has 21 questions. Each describes a situation at work or in personal life, and you pick the decision that fits best, using critical thinking, problem-solving, and prioritisation.
- XAT General Knowledge is Part 2. It lasts 10 minutes and has 20 questions: 8 on static GK and 12 on current affairs. Nothing is lost on a wrong answer there. Its score never enters the percentile, yet XLRI still counts it in final selection.
- Part 1 also penalises wrong answers and extra blanks. A wrong answer costs 0.25 marks with five options on offer, and once you leave 8 questions blank, each further blank costs 0.10. CAT charges nothing for a skipped question.
- Time management is left to the candidate. One 170-minute clock covers Part 1, in any section order. CAT, by contrast, gives you 40 minutes per section.
XAT vs CAT Exam Pattern, Syllabus and Marking Scheme
The XAT vs CAT exam pattern and marking scheme differ at almost every step, from paper length to the cost of skipping a question.

Total time | 120 minutes | 180 minutes 170 for Part 1, 10 for GK |
Section timing | 40 minutes each, in a fixed order | One clock for Part 1, any order |

Question type | Multiple-choice and typed-in answers | Multiple-choice with five options |
Correct answer | +3 | +1 |

Skipped question | 0 | First 8 free, then -0.10 each |
CAT syllabus is broad. It covers reading comprehension and verbal ability, data interpretation and logical reasoning, and quantitative ability. XAT is more specific. Grammar, vocabulary, para jumbles and cloze tests are officially announced. Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, mensuration and modern maths make up its quant side, and data interpretation and decision-making scenarios are mentioned as well.
Is It Easier to Score 99 Percentile in XAT or CAT?
In marks, scoring 99 percentile is easier in CAT than in XAT. CAT's 99 percentile needs a smaller share of its total marks than XAT's does. Both figures are estimates based on past results, and they change with each year's paper.
Benchmark | CAT (2025 paper) | XAT (2026 paper) |
Marks for 99 percentile | About 85 | About 36 |
Maximum marks | 204 | 75 in Part 1 |
Share of maximum marks | About 42% | About 48% |
Questions counted for percentile | 68 | 75, with GK excluded |
In XAT, you must reach this score while losing 0.25 marks for each wrong answer and 0.10 for each blank after the first 8. About 2.58 lakh candidates appeared for CAT 2025. CAT 2026 is expected to need a scaled score of about 85 to 86 for the 99 percentile. Each correct answer adds 3 marks, and each wrong multiple-choice answer deducts 1.
Can You Crack XAT 2027 With CAT 2026 Preparation?
Yes, you can crack XAT 2027 with CAT 2026 preparation. The reading, quant, data interpretation and logical reasoning practice you do for CAT also counts in XAT's VALR and QA & DI sections.
- Keep the 35 days between the two exams for the parts of XAT that CAT preparation leaves out.
- Start Decision Making practice right after CAT, because CAT has no such section. Solve 2 to 3 cases a day, set in the same kind of personal and professional situations as the section's 21 questions.
- The XAT GK Syllabus lists static topics such as the Indian Constitution, geography and business basics, along with current affairs on the economy, government policies and awards. The GK part has 20 questions in all.
- XAT tests grammar, vocabulary, para jumbles and cloze tests in VALR, next to reading comprehension. Set aside part of the 35 days for a fresh round of all four.
- Take XAT mock tests at XAT timing: 170 minutes for Part 1 plus 10 minutes for GK. They train you to divide one clock across three sections.
