Chord Length in Terms of Parameters

For endpoints with parameters $$t_1,t_2$$:

$$L=a|t_1-t_2|\sqrt{(t_1+t_2)^2+4}$$

Usage

- Used directly for chord-length problems involving parametric endpoints.

Question 1

A focal chord $$PQ$$ of the parabola $$y^2=12x$$ has length exactly $$48$$ units.

The tangents drawn at $$P$$ and $$Q$$ intersect at $$T$$.

Find the area of $$\triangle PTQ$$.
