Based on differential adsorption of components on a solid adsorbent (Silica gel or Alumina).

Column Chromatography: Sample passed down a glass column packed with adsorbent.

Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC): Adsorbent coated on a glass/plastic plate.

Retention Factor ($$R_f$$):
