CSAB Special Round 2026
The CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) Special Round 2026 is the centralised admission process that runs after JoSAA 2026 concludes, handling vacant NIT+, IIIT, and GFTI seats that remain unfilled after all 5 JoSAA rounds. The complete CSAB counselling process takes place on csab.nic.in and is open to candidates who were not allotted a seat in JoSAA or who withdrew from a JoSAA NIT+ seat during the Round 5 window (July 16 to July 20). IITs and IISc do not participate in CSAB. CSAB 2026 runs 2 Special Rounds, with registration opening on July 28, 2026 once the NIT+ PAF payment window (July 22 to July 24) closes. Closing ranks are typically more relaxed than JoSAA Round 5 for most branches, though top NIT CSE seats fill quickly with minimal relaxation.

CSAB Special Round Registration 2026
CSAB registration is separate from JoSAA. Candidates who registered for JoSAA must submit a fresh application on csab.nic.in during the CSAB registration window. Eligible candidates include those not allotted any JoSAA seat, those who withdrew from a JoSAA NIT+ seat in Round 5, and fresh JEE Main 2026 rankers who did not participate in JoSAA.
Registration steps:
- Log in to csab.nic.in with your JEE Main 2026 application number and pay the Special Round Enrollment Fee: Rs. 45,000 (General/OBC-NCL/EWS) or Rs. 25,000 (SC/ST/PwD). This total comprises the Institute Admission Fee-I (IAF-I: Rs. 40,000 / Rs. 19,000) plus a fixed, non-refundable Special Round Processing Fee (SRPF) of Rs. 5,000. The IAF-I portion is adjusted against your college tuition fee if a seat is allotted; the Rs. 5,000 SRPF is non-refundable in all cases.
- Fill and lock your choice list of NIT+, IIIT, and GFTI institute-branch combinations. Use Cracku's CSAB College Predictor to shortlist realistic options before locking. There is no cap on the number of choices.
- Verify OBC-NCL and EWS certificates are dated on or after April 1, 2026; earlier certificates will be rejected.
Important: Choice locking in CSAB is irreversible. No additions, deletions, or reordering are permitted after the window closes. Include safety options in your list.

CSAB Special Round Seat Allotment 2026
CSAB seat allotment uses the same merit-cum-preference algorithm as JoSAA, assigning the highest available institute-branch choice from each candidate's locked list. Key differences from JoSAA:
- Only 2 rounds: fewer upgrade opportunities than JoSAA's 5 rounds, making the initial choice list more consequential.
- Smaller seat pool: only seats vacant after JoSAA Round 5 are available; fill a wide, realistic list rather than targeting only premium institutes.
- Float, Freeze, and Slide options apply after Special Round 1, with the same rules as JoSAA.
- No IIT or IISc seats under any circumstance.
Note: Special Round 2 is the final central allotment in the JEE Main 2026 cycle for NIT+. After it closes, candidates who remain unallotted must explore state counselling or private admissions independently.

Vacant Seats Available Through CSAB Special Round 2026
The CSAB seat pool consists of NIT+, IIIT, and GFTI seats that were unfilled or vacated across JoSAA Rounds 1 to 5. Non-CSE branches and seats at remote or newer institutes carry the highest vacancy.
Institute Type | Approx. Vacant Seats | Vacancy Level | Branch Pattern |
|---|---|---|---|
NITs (31 institutes) | ~3,000-4,500 | High | Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical branches have far more vacancies than CSE. |
IIITs (26 institutes) | ~1,200-2,000 | Medium-High | Autonomous IIITs retain more seats; IT and ECE fill faster than other branches. |
GFTIs (58 institutes) | ~2,500-4,000 | Medium | Largest vacant pool by volume; includes NIT Agartala and various state-run technical institutes. |
Note: CSAB publishes the full, exact seat matrix on July 28, 2026, right as registration and choice filling open. Candidates can review the precise vacancy count for every NIT+, IIIT, and GFTI institute-branch-category combination on csab.nic.in before submitting their choice list.

Expected CSAB Special Round 2026 Cutoffs for NITs, IIITs and GFTIs
CSAB closing ranks are typically more relaxed than JoSAA Round 5 for the same institute and branch, because the candidate pool is smaller and remaining seats are those that did not fill at JoSAA closing ranks. The table below shows indicative General (CRL) category estimates based on 2024-2025 CSAB patterns.
Institute & Branch | Category | JoSAA R5 CR (est.) | CSAB CR (est.) | Pattern |
|---|---|---|---|---|
NIT Trichy - CSE | OC (CRL) | ~1,600-1,900 | ~1,900-2,200 | Minimal relaxation; fills in Round 1. |
NIT Warangal - CSE | OC (CRL) | ~2,000-2,400 | ~2,400-2,800 | Small relaxation; fills in Round 1. |
NIT Surathkal - CSE | OC (CRL) | ~2,200-2,700 | ~2,700-3,200 | Moderate relaxation over JoSAA Round 5. |
NIT Calicut - CSE | OC (CRL) | ~2,500-3,000 | ~3,000-3,600 | Meaningful relaxation; worth targeting. |
IIIT Allahabad - IT | OC (CRL) | ~3,500-4,500 | ~4,500-5,500 | Moderate relaxation; IT more open than ECE. |
IIEST Shibpur - CSE (NIT+) | OC (CRL) | ~5,000-6,500 | ~6,500-8,000 | Institute of National Importance; relaxes noticeably across CSAB rounds. |
NIT Patna - CSE | OC (CRL) | ~8,000-10,000 | ~10,000-13,000 | Relaxes steadily; popular mid-rank choice. |
NIT Silchar - CSE | OC (CRL) | ~10,000-13,000 | ~13,000-17,000 | Northeast location; meaningful relaxation. |
Note: These are estimates only. Actual 2026 cutoffs depend on JEE Main score distribution and CSAB registration volume. Always verify with official OR-CR data on csab.nic.in once results are declared.
If your rank is near the cutoff boundary, include the target institute and safer options below your rank. Candidates aiming to improve their rank for future cycles can use JEE questions for targeted practice. Non-CSE branches at top NITs typically show 20-40% more rank relaxation in CSAB than CSE at the same institute. Candidates targeting these seats in a future cycle can build structured preparation through Cracku's JEE mains online coaching.
CSAB Special Round 2026: Conclusion
The CSAB Special Round 2026 provides the final centralised opportunity to secure admission to vacant seats across NITs, IIEST, IIITs, SPAs and participating GFTIs. Eligible candidates must complete fresh registration on csab.nic.in, pay the Special Round Enrolment Fee and submit a wide, carefully ordered choice list. Since CSAB has only two allotment rounds, every institute and branch preference should be selected after reviewing the official vacancy matrix, previous cutoffs, location, fees and admission eligibility.
Candidates receiving a seat must complete willingness selection, fee payment, document upload and query resolution within the prescribed reporting window. Missing any CSAB counselling deadline can result in seat cancellation and removal from subsequent allotment. Although CSAB cutoffs may be more relaxed than the final JoSAA cutoff for several branches, top NIT CSE and other high-demand programmes can close quickly. Candidates should therefore include ambitious, realistic and safe choices in the final locked preference list.
