Which Section Should You Attempt First in XAT 2027?
Decision Making is the section you should attempt first in XAT 2027, and its 21 questions are short work and life cases. XLRI Jamshedpur runs the test on Sunday, January 3, 2027, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. In Part 1 you get 75 questions and 170 minutes, with no clock for any single section. Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning go second. Quant and Data Interpretation go last. General Knowledge (20 questions, 10 minutes) opens only after Part 1 ends.

Best Section Attempt Order for XAT 2027
The best section attempt order for XAT 2027 is Decision Making first, Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning second, and Quant third. The XAT Exam Pattern 2027 keeps these three together in Part 1 under one shared timer and puts General Knowledge on its own in Part 2, after that timer runs out.
Order | Section | Questions |
1 | Decision Making (DM) | 21 |
2 | Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning (VALR) | 26 |
3 | Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation (QA & DI) | 28 |
4 | General Knowledge (GK) | 20 |
Quant and Data Interpretation form the largest section of Part 1, yet they come last here. That works because of how blanks are marked. You can leave 8 questions in Part 1 unanswered at no cost, and each blank from the ninth one onwards costs 0.10 marks. The longest Quant sets can use up those free skips. General Knowledge stays fourth because Part 2 begins only after Part 1 ends, and XLRI alone uses its scores in the final selection.
Should You Attempt Decision Making, VARC or Quant First in XAT?
For most students, Decision Making is the section to attempt first in XAT. Verbal or Quant should open the paper only when your mock scores there are clearly higher. Some students read cases quickly, others are at home with long passages, and a few are fastest with numbers.
Decision Making First
Each question here is a short case from personal or professional life, and you pick the best decision for it. In XAT 2026 the caselets were balanced and needed more logic than ethics. The section was rated easy to moderate that year. Start here if your Decision Making marks in mocks are equal to or better than your other two sections.
VARC First
XAT names this section Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning. A typical paper has reading passages, sometimes on a poem or a cartoon, plus logical reasoning, vocabulary and grammar questions. In XAT 2026, the passages were long. Readers who finish a passage quickly and still get the questions right can open the paper here.
Quant First
You will see arithmetic, algebra, geometry and mensuration here, along with modern math's and data interpretation sets. In XAT 2026 several of these questions needed long calculations. Rated moderate to difficult, it is usually kept for the end, and only a student whose Quant marks in mocks are clearly the best should open with it.
XAT 2027 Section-Wise Time Management Strategy
A section-wise time management strategy for XAT 2027 is something you build yourself. XLRI sets only one time limit for the whole of Part 1. No section gets its own clock, so students usually plan rough minutes for each one and adjust them as their mock results come in.
Section | Suggested Time |
QA & DI | 65 to 70 minutes |
VALR | 50 to 55 minutes |
DM | 40 to 45 minutes |
Part 1 total | 170 minutes |
GK (Part 2) | 10 minutes |
- On opening a section, take about 5 minutes to look over every question in it. The easy ones you mark here are the first ones you answer.
- Read each Decision Making case slowly, and answer it quickly once you have judged it. Skipping the cases you cannot judge cleanly keeps accuracy higher than trying every one.
- A confusing Verbal passage can wait. Leave it, finish the other questions, and come back with the time that remains.
- In Quant, familiar questions come first and the long calculations come later. A scientific calculator is available within the exam interface for those sums.
- In Part 1, a correct answer earns 1 mark and a wrong one loses 0.25 marks. Once a question has used up the time you set for it, leave it and move on.
- Questions marked for review take up the last 5 to 10 minutes. Any still marked with no answer when time ends is not evaluated.
- General Knowledge has 8 static GK questions and 12 on current affairs. Wrong answers there cost nothing, so attempt all of them.
Can You Switch Between Sections in XAT 2027?
Yes. Inside Part 1, you can switch between sections in XAT 2027 whenever you want. Decision Making, Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning, and Quant all stay open on the same screen for the whole of Part 1, and none of them has a separate time limit.
- You may begin with whichever section you like. The section you are in shows up highlighted, and selecting another section's name takes you there.
- Questions work the same way. You can jump to any question by its number, leave it, and return later. An answer counts only after you save it, so save before moving away. When you save the last answer in a section, the screen moves to the first question of the next section.
- Going back is allowed too. Suppose you marked a Decision Making question and then moved to Quant. That question can still be opened again while Part 1 is running.
- A countdown timer on screen shows how much time is left in the part you are on. At the 170-minute mark, Part 1 closes by itself, and the General Knowledge questions of Part 2 come up next. Up to then, the answer to this question remains a plain yes.
How to Choose the Best Section Order Based on Your Strengths?
The best section order based on your strengths comes from your own full mocks. Line up your section marks across several tests, and begin with the section where the numbers are highest. A full mock puts all three Part 1 sections on one shared clock, the same way the real XAT 2027 paper does.
Strongest Section | Order to Follow |
DM | DM, then VALR, then QA & DI |
VALR | VALR, then DM, then QA & DI |
QA & DI | QA & DI, then DM, then VALR |
- After every mock, note your marks, attempts and minutes in each section. A pattern usually shows up after a few tests, and your order should follow it.
- A section that keeps taking too many minutes when you analyze XAT mocks belongs later in your order.
- Settle on one order before the final weeks and stay with it in every mock that follows. By January 3, that order has been practiced many times over.
