Roots on Opposite Sides of a Point

## Formula

For a quadratic with real roots $$\alpha,\beta$$, if:

$$f(k)<0$$

when:

$$a>0$$

then $$k$$ lies between the two roots:

$$\alpha<k<\beta$$

Similarly, if:

$$f(k)>0$$

when:

$$a<0$$

then:

$$\alpha<k<\beta$$

## Usage

- Used to determine whether a point lies between the roots.

Question 1

Let $$\alpha$$ and $$\beta$$ be the roots of the equation $$x^{2}+2ax+\left(3a+10\right)=0$$ such that $$\alpha < 1 < \beta$$. Then the set of all possible values of $$a$$ is :
