Simultaneous Solubility of Sparingly Soluble Salt

Rarely Tested

$$[Ag^+] = S_1 + S_2$$

$$K_{sp1} = (S_1 + S_2) S_1 \qquad \text{and} \qquad K_{sp2} = (S_1 + S_2) S_2 \implies \frac{S_1}{S_2} = \frac{K_{sp1}}{K_{sp2}}$$

Concept: $$\text{Calculates individual solubilities when two salts with a common ion dissolve simultaneously in water.}$$

Notation:

  • $$\text{Notation: } S_1, S_2 = \text{Solubilities of first and second salt respectively}$$
  • $$\text{Notation: } K_{sp1}, K_{sp2} = \text{Solubility products of the respective salts}$$
